MG S5 EV: ZS EV reloaded

The ZS EV marked the breakthrough for MG – but that was also a few years ago: the model was presented in 2016 and went into production in 2017. It's time for a successor.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) always shows cars first before they officially go into production. According to the documents, two rear-wheel-drive versions with a 125-kW motor were shown, which are supposed to have a top speed of 170 km/h. Visually, it is primarily oriented towards the MG 4 at the rear, comes with 17- or 18-inch wheels, and optionally, of course, with a glass roof. It could also be based on the MSP platform.

The supplier information is always interesting: The drive units are said to come from the Shanghai supplier United Automotive Electronics. The LFP battery packs are to be sourced by MG from Times SAIC Power Battery, a joint venture that SAIC founded with CATL in 2017. The battery capacities and the range are not yet known.

The specifications suggest that the S5 EV could succeed the ZS EV but will be positioned higher. With a length, width, and height of 4,476 mm, 1,849 mm, and 1,621 mm respectively, the S5 EV is primarily 153 mm longer, 40 mm wider, and up to 28 mm lower than the ZS EV, which also benefits the proportions. The wheelbase is also significantly larger by 149 mm, growing to 2,730 mm, which reaches mid-size level. This should also offer much more space in the rear.

The weights are light: MG specifies 1,615 kg, 1,685 kg, and 1,740 kg as curb weights, which indicates three versions, but not with all-wheel drive. In absolute terms, it would belong to the light electric SUVs. It is expected that the S5 EV will debut in China in 2024, and the portal Car News China considers it "very likely" that the MG S5 will be exported – and could follow the ZS EV in Europe in 2025.

What does this mean?

With the S5 EV, MG positions the new model more clearly above the MG 4 than the ZS EV. It is quite possible that other versions will be introduced later. Fundamentally, the ZS EV would be ripe for replacement. The S5 EV would be a logical, albeit much larger and more expensive successor.
