MG Motor: Upward trend continues, return of assembly in Europe is planned
At the presentation of the MG4 X-Power and the MG4 "Trophy Extended Range," spokesperson Marc Hecht was very reserved: Yes, they could break the 20,000 mark by the end of the year in Germany and yes, they were on a good path, but for him, only the current numbers mattered.
And these numbers look very good: By the end of September, the brand had delivered 14,869 vehicles in Germany, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Compared to the same period last year, this represents an increase of 98.3 percent. In 2023, MG Motor has nearly doubled its registration figures compared to 2022. Moreover, despite a strong previous year, this is one of the strongest growth rates of all brands in the German market.
What makes Hecht happy is that they have already almost reached the total result of 2022 in the first nine months of 2023. In their record year of 2022, MG Motor sold a total of 15,584 cars. Already before the last quarter, the brand now reaches over 95 percent of their 2022 result. The largest market remains the UK, where MG is still seen as a British brand and never completely disappeared even after the MG Rover collapse in 2005. Philipp Hempel, Senior Director Sales & Performance Marketing at MG Motor Germany, is pleased:
"Our model range is broadly set up and oriented towards the wishes of our customers. With our vehicles, we make electromobility affordable for everyone. Therefore, I am confident that our growth course will continue. I am particularly looking forward to the fascinating MG Cyberster, which will be available starting next year."
Besides the Cyberster, according to Hecht, further models are in the pipeline, and it can be assumed that MG will expand the range at both the upper and lower ends. The MG2 could also receive an electric successor, which would then start with a "two" in the gross prices.
The strongest driver of the success course in the German market remains the MG4 Electric. With 3,572 new vehicle registrations, the Electric Hatch set not only the previous best mark among MG Motor models within a quarter between July and September, but also steadily increased sales since market launch in September 2022, most recently by 32.5 percent. A total of 10,429 MG4 Electrics have been newly registered since September 2022 – no MG Motor model has been more frequently delivered in Germany since the brand's relaunch in 2021. Moreover, the MG4 Electric is the first new MG to show five-digit registration numbers overall and is among the most popular fully electric vehicles in the compact class. It is said to have even ranked first in the segment of private lease vehicles in Germany in September.
The MG4 Electric, which was recently named German Car of the Year 2024 in the compact class, is also the most popular vehicle of the brand this year with 8,660 units sold. In second and third places are the MG ZS with 2,837 units sold and the MG5 Electric with 1,592 units sold, respectively.
