MG Cyberster GTS: The Coupé to the Roadster

Goodwood is also important for MG: Here, they can play their British tradition card.

MG hesitated a bit and announced another look at the experimental model "EXE 181." But then the relatively new MG design chief Jozef Kaban removed the cover from the car and unveiled the Cyberster GTS.

Honda and MG also dare to make a coupé in the future

It could revive the "coupé" theme together with the recently presented Honda Prelude and become the most important model in Europe alongside it. The difference: the GTS is fully electric and will be significantly heavier and stronger than the Japanese competitor. And since it is a more affordable derivative of the roadster, a production launch is also likely.

And chief designer Jozef Kaban, who completely overhauled Skoda and rather sank in the BMW group, now seems to have found a good place at MG: He is said to have enthusiastically declared:

"Even if we have to clean it again, touch the car, feel it to sense the lines."

He vividly explained the side view with a comparison to a cat:

"The car seems to crouch a bit, like a cat before jumping."

After MG officially declared its founding year as 1924 – “Morris Garages” existed in 1923, but operated more as a repair, sales, and tuning workshop – General Manager Cecil Kimber officially elevated it to a sports brand, which was not exactly the original intention of the company founder William Morris.

Instead of the folding roof, the GTS has two emergency seats installed, otherwise, the GTS corresponds to the roadster up to the beltline. There is more space in the rear and, as mentioned: two small emergency seat shells... although they kept quiet about this part. The scissor doors and the remaining package were retained. For the rear-wheel-drive, this means 250 kW / 340 hp with 475 Nm of torque, and for the all-wheel-drive, up to 375 kW / 510 hp and 720 Nm of torque.

And since we're celebrating MG anniversaries: Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advanced London, would like to see it in production by 2025, as the MG B GT – the fixed-roof variant of the MG B Roadster from 1962 – was introduced in 1965. This would make a fitting “gift” for the 60th birthday of the MGB GT. Prices are likely to be in line with the Roadster – perhaps even slightly lower?

What does that mean?

The coupé makes sense because it shares many components with the Roadster, indirectly increasing its production numbers. Whether it will reach six-figure production numbers as it once did is doubtful, but the Cyberster will definitely benefit the brand's image and offer customers more choices. And with hybrid support expected from the Honda Prelude, the coupé might even experience another spring.
