MG 5 coming from March 2022
MG brings its station wagon with two powertrains: It starts with the "Maximum" version, which means a 61.1 kWh battery that should offer up to 400 kilometers of range according to WLTP. The electric motor produces 115 kW (156 PS). Unusual: The standard version that follows later has a smaller 50.3 kWh battery but 130 kW (177 PS). MG states a range of up to 320 kilometers. Both MG 5 Electric models should offer 280 Newton meters of torque and accelerate to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, with a top speed limited to 185 km/h.
Charging can be done with AC up to 11 kW and with DC up to 87 kW. This should allow the MG 5 to charge from five to 80 percent of its capacity in about 40 minutes. The MG 5 is available in two trim levels. In the German market, the MG5 Electric is offered with prices ranging between 25,920.00 euros (net about 21,780 euros) and 30,420.00 euros (about 25,563 euros) - already taking into account the current subsidies for electric vehicles for end consumers and manufacturers, which amount to 9,570 euros. Depending on the choice of color, additional costs of up to 650.00 euros may apply, and a gray interior is available for the luxury version for an additional 1,000.00 euros.
The MG is even allowed to tow trailers, however, they are only allowed to weigh a maximum of 500 kg, the maximum tongue weight is 50 kg and the roof load is 75 kg.
What does that mean?
With the MG 5, the Chinese are making an absolutely pragmatic and affordable offer. With the small battery, long distances could become somewhat tedious and it doesn't set any benchmarks in terms of charging performance or variability – but it does in terms of price: After deduction of the subsidy, it's a good 25,000 euros – that could be a significant figure for many. Especially since, as an electric compact estate, it is actually (still) alone in the market.
