The van manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Vans has announced the first successful cold tests with the next generation of the eSprinter. Even after just over half of the multi-week test period, the vehicle has proven to be fully winter-worthy, even in the most demanding test cycles. Production of the E-Van is set to start gradually, beginning in the second half of 2023 in Charleston (South Carolina, USA), followed by Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde, each with CO2-neutral production. The manufacturer is investing around 350 million euros in the development of the new electric models, with approximately 50 million euros being invested in each of the three plants.

The requirements for the next generation of the eSprinter have been defined in cooperation with customers, such as those from the CEP sector (courier, express, and parcel services), as well as body manufacturers. With three battery options and numerous body variants ranging from panel vans to chassis for box bodies, the next generation aims to open up new customer segments and succeed in markets such as the USA and Canada. The range is promised to more than double compared to the current model, depending on the configuration.

The eCitan is coming later this year

They are convinced of the ecological and economic advantages of battery-electric vans, according to Stuttgart. In the current model, body manufacturers and customers can choose from four battery-electric vans: the eSprinter, the eVito panel van, the eVito Tourer, and the EQV. Announced for 2022 are the new eCitan and the technically identical, more luxurious E-variant of the T-Class, which was developed in cooperation with Renault and the new Kangoo.

In the medium term, the manufacturer has announced a completely new E-van platform for the then third generation of E-vans. The first models on the so-called VAN.EA are expected to hit the market around the middle of the decade. By the end of the decade, the brand with the star aims to be ready to go fully electric, "wherever market conditions allow," as they cautiously state. From 2025 onwards, all new vehicle architectures are to be purely electric.
