Mercedes E-Class Estate – New Edition of the Luxury Wagon
The new E-Class is not yet on the market, but the Swabians are now introducing the E-Class station wagon version. There will be no all-electric version, but efficient gasoline and diesel engines – optionally with a plug. With two curved light elements per side, the Mercedes face is reinterpreted. From the front, the station wagon resembles the sedan, and even the body variants’ lengths are identical at 4.95 meters. The elegant roofline makes the station wagon model a shooting brake.
"As of today, the E-Class with its derivatives is the last model from Mercedes-Benz to be built on a purely combustion platform," says Chief Development Officer Markus Schäfer.
More space for passengers
Compared to its predecessor, the E-Class has grown in width by 28 millimeters. This mainly benefits the rear passengers with more generous space. The wheelbase has increased by 22 to now 2961 millimeters. Rear passengers now have more knee room and legroom. The cargo space can be expanded from 615 to up to 1,830 liters (previous T-model 640 - 1,820 liters). For the plug-in hybrid model, the cargo volume is 460 to 1,675 liters, and even in the part-time electric model, the load floor is now continuously flat.
The rear seatbacks are split 40:20:40 and can be folded down from the trunk at the push of a button. Also standard is the electrically opening and closing "Easy-Pack tailgate."
Interior Even More Digital
Mercedes is pursuing digitalization consistently. The pinnacle of display software and interface worlds is the MBUX Superscreen, with a glass surface spanning the entire width of the interior and an optional passenger display. Here, video content can be viewed during the drive – the camera-based system of the new Mercedes E-Class prevents the driver from becoming distracted. A high-performance central computer controls the MBUX infotainment system, which is increasingly resembling smartphone operation.
The artificial intelligence (AI) of Mercedes is designed to pamper passengers with previously unmatched quality. The voice control responds to commands even without the previous "Hey, Mercedes" activation and understands multiple instructions connected with "and." And the AI learns: if certain processes recur – such as lowering the side window in the morning to enter a parking garage – Mercedes will soon automatically actuate the side window and lower it at that spot.
MBUX aims to do even more for the driver. The screen can display the pulse or fitness level from the Apple Smartwatch, and the system even suggests a revitalization program with massage, music, and special scents in case of irregularities. When the vehicle is stationary, Zoom conferences are possible through the system, and the ambient lighting can swing to match the music.
Mild Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid
Generally, the same engines will be available for the E-Class Station Wagon and the Sedan. Mercedes has further electrified the drives. At the market launch, half of all engine variants will be plug-in hybrids. The purely electric range of the hybrids should be up to 100 kilometers or even more according to WLTP. The plug-in hybrid offerings at market launch in Summer 2023 will range from the E 300 e (313 hp/230 kW, also available as 4Matic) to the E 400 e (381 hp/280 kW), with additional diesel-hybrid engine variants to follow. The mild hybrids will include the E 200 (204 hp/150 kW) and E 220 d (197 hp/145 kW, also available as 4Matic). Thanks to a new battery, the power of the Integrated Starter Generator increases from 15 to 17 kW, and in boost mode, an extra torque of 205 Newton meters is now available. AMG models are also planned (AMG E 53 and AMG E 63).
In 2024, Mercedes will add a gasoline and a diesel engine, both three-liter six-cylinders. Also in 2024, the slightly raised All-Terrain version of the Station Wagon will hit the market, and a convertible and a coupe will also follow.
Air suspension at the rear – standard for mild hybrids
Even the mild hybrids of the E-Class T-Models are equipped with single-chamber air suspension at the rear axle. Air suspension standard on all four wheels is reserved for the more expensive E-Class variants (otherwise available as an option). A refined Airmatic air suspension with adaptive dampers is intended to optimize comfort and sportiness. The integrated rear-axle steering reduces the turning circle by 90 centimeters, but only for the sedan, as there was simply not enough space for the technology in the T-Model.
The Swabians have yet to mention specific prices, which will be released in the summer when the E-Class becomes available to order. Due to the improved standard equipment compared to the current model, the E 200 will likely start at a minimum of 55,000 euros.
What does that mean?
The E-Class T-Model will be the last on the combustion engine platform. With more and more technology and AI, the new E-Class is more digital than ever. And the price list will start higher than ever – with countless upgrade options such as Superscreen, automated driving and parking, and various other amenities.
