Mercedes-Benz Vito Facelift: Inner values count

Within a few months, the company Sicherheitstechnik Ramsl has completely overhauled its fleet – with two Mercedes-Benz Vito, the second of which is the sixth facelift model ever ordered. Company owner Alexander Ramsl especially notices the advancements in MBUX and lighting.

Big Hello at the Mercedes-Benz dealership on Frankfurter Ring in Munich: After the first Vito 119 CDI 4x4 took a few months to arrive - which is why Ramsl drove the identical predecessor longer - the new one came in two months: The 116 CDI for colleague Sven Willecke was ordered on 15.1.2024 and was ready for delivery on 15.3.2024.

Both originally came from other brands and as always: service and availability make the difference, not the premium talk from Mercedes-Benz Vans because: in this case, sales and service are literally just around the corner and usually understand (although unfortunately not as consistently as before) what the safety technicians need. And they can then make corresponding offers because: Ramsl requires a specially configured Sortimo interior and does not want any stress with the pickup and return of his "tools". A reason why the decision fell on Mercedes-Benz.

Vans have become significantly more expensive: the rates have increased significantly.

For Ramsl, a 119 CDI 4x4 was preceded by another brand, whose return was somewhat rough. So Vito, for once 516.75 euros a month with three-way financing for more flexibility. That was in the early 2020s, the subtle "facelift", one of the last delivered 2023 models, now costs 919.80 euros, service extra.

A short side note, since Ramsl, despite the proximity of the stars, also had other brands make offers: Ford, VW, and Co. charge a similar amount for similarly configured vans. The new facelifted 116 CDI without all-wheel drive is noticeably cheaper: it costs 715.09 euros in leasing - which with service becomes over 1,000 euros! Both contracts run for four years with 120,000 kilometers.

MBUX is a huge advancement

And now the facelift – what does it bring? Especially MBUX is a huge step forward compared to the Audio 40 system in the predecessor: While the latter often takes a few hundred meters to boot, MBUX is ready almost with the turn of the key! And it is easy to use and above all, understands speech well.

Let there be light!

Otherwise? The optics remained completely the same from the back, but the front has a new daytime running light signature and dramatically better headlights: "The night forest becomes a studio in daylight," jokes Ramsl, who hopes for a slightly lower consumption: The 119 CDI 4x4 requires 8.5 to 10.5 l/100 km of diesel, depending on the driving style, and the 116 often comes under 8 liters. What's interesting here: Since the company occasionally takes on jobs that are significantly more than 100 km away, they also lifted the 160 km/h limitation, which was automatically included in the 116’s configurator. Because sometimes it has to go fast...

Details make the difference – especially in competence

Otherwise, Ramsl still wonders about the details in the expansion. As an electrician, even more so about how LED interior lights and switches are sometimes installed. Despite decades of experience, the individual competence of the service advisor (in this case from Sortimo) still makes the difference here. This also applies to the Mercedes-Benz branch, which now operates independently from the Van-Center, leading to additional loops when returning the predecessor vehicle.

Ramsl actually wanted to avoid these and that's why he once switched to Mercedes-Benz... because once again, the first car is sold by the salesman, the second by the service. And the third in this case, not by the facelift, but also by the competent Mercedes-Benz employee. Which is why the sale of the Mercedes-Benz branches might not be such a glorious idea. Because competence wrestling between manufacturer and service point ultimately at the expense of the customers can be done by everyone else too. Safety technology was once the reason Ramsl changed brands.

What does that mean?

With the facelift, the Vito gained mainly in terms of light (and thus visibility) and infotainment. The nearly identical "oil engines" of the 119 and 116 CDI continue to chug away as usual. So, electric for electricians in the future? For now, distances with the heavy interior expansion and the rates are still too high for Ramsl.
