Mercedes-Benz: Next eSprinter will be built at three locations
The next generation of the eSprinter was already announced by Mercedes-Benz Vans in 2020. It will be based on the newly developed Electric Versatility Platform. The manufacturer aims to tap into additional customer segments and markets – including the USA and Canada. Three Mercedes-Benz Vans plants are designated for production. These include the U.S. Sprinter plant in Charleston as well as the two German locations in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde. According to the manufacturer, the necessary remodeling and qualification measures for the personnel are in preparation. Marcus Breitschwerdt, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, explains:
"The future of mobility, particularly in the transport sector and on the last mile, is electric. Therefore, our share of battery-electric vehicles is steadily growing. We have consistently aligned our strategy accordingly and underscore our leadership ambition in electric mobility in the van segment with the strategic pillar 'Lead in Electric Drive.'"
Even today, the eSprinter is being built in Düsseldorf on the same line as conventionally powered Sprinter models. The principle of producing both drive variants will also be implemented in the plants in Charleston and Ludwigsfelde. This allows for a very precise response to respective market needs. The next generation of the eSprinter, in addition to the previously available panel van variant, will also be produced as an open chassis model, thus serving as a base vehicle for, among others, ambulances, motorhomes, or refrigerated transporters.
With the newly developed Electric Versatility Platform, the manufacturer aims to expand its position in the commercial series and at the same time ensure market-oriented production. According to Breitschwerdt, the company is investing significantly in this:
"Overall, we are investing around 350 million euros in the next generation of the eSprinter."
Dr. Ingo Ettischer, Head of Production at Mercedes-Benz Vans, adds that by distributing production across the three sites, the goal is to expand the global production network and create synergies.
"We benefit from the expertise we have already successfully established in our plant in Düsseldorf, where we produce electric and conventionally powered transporters on one line. This enables us to quickly meet the steadily growing demand for electrically powered vans in the future and to respond very precisely to the requirements of different markets thanks to our intelligent and flexible production. Additionally, we can optimally utilize our capacities."
According to Ettischer, the production of the eSprinter is set to gradually start at all three locations from the second half of 2023. The company is placing a major emphasis on sustainability in this effort. From 2039, all locations worldwide will produce CO2-neutral. Ettischer names an initial goal on the way there:
Translated automatically from German."At Mercedes-Benz Vans, we are pursuing CO2-neutral production and will use only green electricity in all our own plants from 2022 onwards."
