Mercedes-Benz Cars: E-demand doubles
The less visually striking EQE SUV and EQS SUV are proving their worth in sales, but even the EQA and EQB are now better charged than ever: In the second quarter of 2023, around 56,300 electric vehicles were sold, surpassing all previous quarters: Quarter 4 of 2022 had 42,400 units and the first quarter of 2023 saw 51,600 electric stars. The EQA increased by 73 percent, the EQB by 83 percent, the EQE by 157 percent - with Mercedes-Benz reporting 9,000 units sold for the EQE. However, the SUVs are significantly stronger: Mercedes reports sales of 10,000 units for the EQE SUV - as many as the more expensive EQS SUV in the first two quarters, where 10,900 vehicles were sold.
After all, every tenth Mercedes-Benz is now an electric vehicle
Nevertheless, electric vehicles make up just 10.9 percent of all 515,700 units in the second quarter, 6 percent more than in 2022. In the first six months of 2023, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars sold 102,600 BEVs worldwide (+121 percent). With total sales of 1.02 million vehicles, the electric share in the first half of the year stands at an even ten percent. At least the electric vehicles grew more than the internal combustion engines. A quick glance over to Munich: at BMW, the BEV share is 14.1 percent. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz wants to achieve a 17 percent BEV share in Germany.
Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales, explained:
"With a clear focus on sustainable growth, we have continued to increase sales in all key regions and segments in the second quarter, particularly in our electric vehicles and the top-end segment."
Smart is listed with 4,900 units – compared to the second quarter of 2022, the joint venture with Geely recorded a decrease of 1,100 units or 19 percent in 2022. In the first half of 2023, Smart sales stood at 10,300 units.
What does this mean?
The all-electric models at Mercedes-Benz are slowly but surely gaining traction. In Asia, they even managed to sell 734 percent more electric vehicles, albeit starting from a very low level. One way or another, the EQA to EQS are carving out their place in the model range.
