Mercedes-Benz AMG EQE: Electric E-Class with Performance Boost

The arms race in the premium electric vehicle segment continues: The high-performance versions of the EQE models are powered by two synchronous motors and deliver 350 kW and 460 kW.

Strong, not necessarily meaningful: The AMG-EQE has been subtly altered in appearance. With the Dynmamic-Plus package, it is said to reach 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. | Photo: Mercedes-Benz | Photo: Mercedes-Benz

The new AMG models of the EQE offer plenty of power and torque: The AMG EQE 43 delivers 350 kW (476 hp) and provides 860 Newton meters of torque; the AMG EQE 53 even brings 460 kW (626 hp) and 950 Nm. But it gets even better: With the optional Dynamic Plus package, the values for the EQE 53 increase to 505 kW (687 hp) and 1000 Nm. The top speed is limited to 210 km/h (EQE 43), 220 km/h (EQE 53), or 240 km/h (EQE 53 with Dynamic Plus). The battery pack with the aforementioned 90.6 kWh usable capacity, according to preliminary figures, provides WLTP ranges of 462 to 533 km (EQE 43 4MATIC) or 444 to 518 km (EQE 53 4MATIC+).

The state of charge is an important additional specification for the sprint values: In the 43 model, the time for the standard sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h is 4.2 seconds when the battery is charged to at least 50 percent. For the 53 model, the specified value is at least 70 percent State of Charge (SoC). Thus, the limousine can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.5 or 3.3 seconds (3.3 seconds with the Dynamic Plus package).

The power jump from the EQE 43 to the EQE 53 is achieved not only through software but also with different hardware: It has stronger motors and a more complex cooling system. The power distribution via the single-speed transmission is rear-biased, air suspension is standard, and the chassis is configured more rigidly compared to the regular EQE. The brakes are also reinforced, and for an additional cost, there is a carbon fiber-ceramic brake system, which should effectively decelerate the 2.5 tonnes.

Charging power remains at a maximum of 170 kW

The DC charging power, as with the base EQE, is up to 170 kW, meaning that in 15 minutes, up to 180 WLTP kilometers can be recharged. For AC charging, the EQE comes standard with an 11 kW onboard charger, putting charging time at over nine hours. With the optional and recommended 22 kW charger, the time can be halved. Interesting: In Japan, the EQE will also have a bidirectional charging function.

If navigation with “Electric Intelligence” is activated, the battery is preheated or cooled during the drive to achieve the optimal temperature for fast charging at the charging point. Additionally, there are “intelligent” charging functions: The “ECO Charging” function optionally reduces the battery load during charging and is intended to slow the natural aging process of the battery – this also applies to the charging process itself. With the “Charge Interrupt” function, where customers connect the car to their home wallbox after work, the charging process can be paused at freely selectable times – for example, to take advantage of cheaper night-time electricity.

For the EQE, Mercedes-Benz provides a battery certificate valid for up to ten years or a mileage of 250,000 kilometers. However, Mercedes does not specify the chosen lower limit for the “State of Health” in this context.

From the outside, the AMG models differ with add-on parts and AMG-specific decor. Inside, the AMG styling package ensures subtle differences. And the sound? That’s taken care of too! There are AMG-specific sound effects for the Dynamic-Plus package. Mercedes-Benz has not yet released prices, but they are likely to be noticeably higher than those of the "Standard EQE".

What does that mean?

Even before the Standard EQE takes the streets by storm, Mercedes-Benz is launching three AMG versions with mind-boggling performance, doing the exact opposite of the EQXX. Nevertheless, the AMG will also find its customers – even if it is not likely to contribute to the traffic transition.
