The shop solution specialist Mer Austria has started testing a battery storage system for the first time. The pilot project was developed in Spital am Semmering in collaboration with the electricity storage manufacturer and long-term partner Fenecon. It aims to ensure consistently high charging performance for electric vehicle drivers even during high site utilization. Since mid-May 2024, electric vehicle drivers in Spital am Semmering have benefited from the new battery storage at one of Mer's most frequented charging locations in Austria. This storage serves as a power buffer and supports the two 150 kW hyperchargers on site.

Pilot operation for future projects

The newly installed buffer storage is continuously recharged throughout the day. If the energy from the grid is insufficient, it is simply compensated by the electricity from the battery. This covers peak loads during high electricity demand and ensures a constant charging performance. The electricity storage manufacturer Fenecon from Deggendorf contributed its expertise in electricity storage technology and has already successfully cooperated with Mer in various research projects. With the pilot operation, data and insights are gathered to successfully integrate battery storage at future locations and offer customers the best possible charging performance.

"Battery storage systems, alongside photovoltaics, are a sustainable addition to effective charging infrastructure for our public charging offerings," explains Anton Achatz, Managing Director of Mer Austria GmbH.

This would allow peak loads to be absorbed, and they can serve as an interim solution if the required grid connections are delayed.

Additional Charging Park Planned

In addition to the current charging options at the site of McDonald's Spital am Semmering, the provider is also planning an expansion of the charging options on site. Directly opposite the current location, a new charging park is to be built in the future, which, as usual, will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. In terms of size, the charging options will be modeled on the already successfully operated charging park in Spittal an der Drau. From September 2024, a total of nine fast-charging stations with 18 charging points with a capacity of up to 400 kW will be available there.
