Design Rather Conventional

Mazda CX-60 speaks of a powerful-elegant Kodo design in its latest development. In reality, we are accustomed to more innovative designs from the Japanese; the exterior appears to be a mix of design elements from competitors.

Inside, various materials and surfaces, including maple wood, Nappa leather, Japanese textiles, chrome accents, and particularly detailed stitching on the instrument panel, are meant to combine to create a unique, Japanese-influenced ambiance. The press images certainly promise a homey atmosphere. It is somewhat surprising that the Japanese continue to rely on leather, as many manufacturers are now promoting the use of vegan imitations made from recycled materials for sustainability reasons.

Technology Fireworks

New and further developed technologies are intended to intensify the connection between driver and vehicle. One example is the new Driver Personalization System: It uses a camera to detect the eye position and, after entering the body height, automatically adjusts the surroundings – seat position, steering wheel, exterior mirrors, and head-up display.

In addition, the system can automatically recall previously saved personalized settings, including sound and climate settings. Other technical highlights of the Mazda CX-60 include the Mazda Drive Mode Selector Mi-Drive with five driving modes including the purely electric EV mode, the next-generation 360° monitor with See-Through View for an expanded field of vision, an exit warning system for traffic approaching from the rear, and Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) – a driving stability system that minimizes body roll in corners.

Plug-in drive and gasoline engine generate 327 HP system performance

The plug-in hybrid drive system, consisting of a 2.5-liter Skyactiv G inline-four gasoline engine with 141 kW/191 HP and a 100 kW/136 HP electric motor, develops a system performance of 241 kW/327 HP as well as a maximum system torque of 500 Nm. The 355-volt battery has a capacity of 17.8 kWh, enabling an all-electric range of 63 kilometers (according to WLTP). The top speed in pure electric drive mode is 140 km/h.

At an 11 kW AC wallbox, the battery can be charged via the two-phase on-board AC charger with a maximum charging power of 7.2 kW. The fuel consumption in the combined WLTP cycle is 1.5 liters per 100 kilometers, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 33 g/km.

Equipment Lines and Prices

The new crossover flagship model is based on a new platform and is offered in four equipment lines.

Even in the base version Prime-line (from 47,390 euros), the Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV AWD features extensive standard equipment, including dual-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system, and wireless smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and full LED headlights.

Starting from the Exclusive-line (from 49,090 euros), a head-up display, a keyless entry system, a rearview camera, and front steering wheel and seat heating are additionally included. The visual appearance is enhanced with a piano black grille and window frames, 20-inch silver metallic alloy wheels, and a signature lighting design at the front and rear.

The sporty equipment line Homura (from 51,390 euros) combines body-colored painted exterior parts with striking black design accents. Inside, the Mazda CX-60 Homura features black leather upholstery. The Takumi equipment line (from 52,890 euros), which is also based on the Exclusive-line, is meant to offer a particularly stylish interior ambiance.

The new Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV can be pre-ordered immediately from all Mazda dealers. For purchases made from March 14, 2022, six years of Mazda manufacturer's warranty (up to a maximum of 150,000 km) are also included. Delivery of the first customer vehicles is expected to begin in June of this year.

What does this mean?

It seems Mazda has somewhat missed the trend. Apart from the Mazda MX-30, the Japanese manufacturer does not offer a pure electric model. Now presenting a new crossover with no fully electric version available seems not very innovative.
