Maxus made a grand appearance in Hanover: The eTerron9 is the first fully electric pickup with standard all-wheel drive in Europe. It is set to spearhead a major model offensive by Maxus in Europe, as Utz Rachner, Country Manager Germany at SAIC Maxus Europe, explains:

“Europe plays a central role for Maxus and the SAIC Group. After the successful start in one of the most demanding regions in the world, we are now going on the offensive. With further new models, we aim to expand our pioneering role in sustainable and emission-free mobility.”

The 5.5-meter-long eTerron9 offers a maximum payload of up to 620 kilograms. For longer items, the back wall of the driver's cab can be lowered at the push of a button. This creates a loading area of up to 2.40 meters.

Powerful Engines, Thoughtful Details

The eTerron9 is driven by two permanent magnet synchronous motors. They deliver 125 kW at the front and 200 kW at the rear axle, resulting in a total output of 325 kW. The energy for the electric drive is provided by a 102 kWh high-voltage battery. The maximum DC charging power is somewhat modest, with Maxus only specifying 115 kW. This is why charging from 20 to 80 percent is expected to take around 40 minutes.

The robustly designed lithium iron phosphate battery is suspended in a nine-cell protective frame developed with a "Tetris construction method". This is supposed to be able to distribute impact forces horizontally and vertically, just like in the game Tetris. According to Maxus, this minimizes the space requirement and increases capacity and safety. Battery temperature was also taken into consideration: a nine-channel ventilation system is intended to contribute to optimal battery temperature. Together with efficient energy recovery, thermal management is expected to improve winter range by 10 percent compared to conventional electric cars, according to Maxus. The standard range of the eTerron9 is up to 430 kilometers according to WLTP combined - realistically, it is more likely to be 250 to 300, significantly less with a 3.5-ton trailer.

The V2L function for supplying external devices with power is well thought out: In addition to several 2.2 kW sockets in the 236-liter "frunk" and on the loading area, there is also an external 6.6 kW connection to which tools from tradespeople or e-bikes and coolers for camping holidays can be connected. The frunk also offers two seats for taking a break.

But most importantly, the 3.5 tonne towing capacity is clearly the standout feature – according to Maxus, the best value for all-electric pickups in this class.

The sales launch for the eTerron 9 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024. Further information about the vehicle, including prices and details about the market introduction in individual markets, will be announced then.

What does that mean?

Pickups are also going electric: With the eTerron 9, Maxus is taking a big step here - especially in terms of towing capacity. But Isuzu and Toyota are also already considering e-pickups. Ford is coming with the Ranger as a PHEV - the segment remains exciting.
