Maserati Grecale: Electric from 2023
Developed in Modena, assembled in the (Alfa) Cassino plant: The Grecale is set to become Maserati’s new volume model. Like Khamsin or Mistral, it is again named after a wind: The Grecale is a strong and cool Mediterranean wind that occurs due to low-pressure systems in the Mediterranean.
Powerful petrol engines, not really economical as expected
As an upper mid-range SUV, it comes as a combustion engine, through a hybrid solution, to a fully electric version. This makes the Grecale the first fully electric SUV in Maserati's history. However, they are starting with the four-cylinder turbos, which deliver 300 hp (and consume 8.7-9.2l/100 km, which means 198-208g/km CO2 emissions). Above the GT is the mild hybrid “Modena”, which offers 330 hp and is supposed to consume 8.8 to 9.3l/100 km, which means 199-210g/km CO2 emissions).
The top version is the Trofeo with Maserati's own 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine with 390 kW (530 hp). It is based on the Nettuno engine of the MC20 supercar but is supposed to be slightly more economical: According to Maserati, it consumes 11.2 l/100 km combined, which means CO2 emissions of 254 g/km. At launch, the Grecale is also available in the PrimaSerie Launch Edition, a limited special series with exclusive content. To complete the range, a year later the Grecale Folgore will follow, the fully electric version with 400-volt technology.
Inside, as expected, one indulges in noble materials like wood, carbon, and leather. “Mid-range” is relative since the Grecale measures a noticeable 4.85 meters in length, significantly longer than the Alfa Stelvio. This is complemented by a wheelbase of 2,901 millimeters and a rather generous height of 1.67 meters. Space should be ample.
Back on board - the Maserati clock - this time digitally with concierge function
The Italians did not want to forego the traditional Maserati clock: Here, for the first time, digital, it is supposed to transform into a concierge thanks to voice control. The entire operating concept is touchscreen-based. This includes several displays: a 12.3-inch central screen, another 8.8-inch screen for additional controls, and a third for the passengers in the back seats. The multimedia system is called Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) with state-of-the-art infotainment including Maserati Connect.
Behind the tailgate, the Grecale offers 570 liters of trunk volume, with the mild hybrid version retaining (due to the battery in the lower level) 535 liters, expandable to over 1000 liters.
The market launch is scheduled for the second half of 2022, with prices for the GT starting at 71,519 euros gross, equating to 60,100 euros net. The Modena begins at 81,991 euros gross, equating to 68,900 euros net, and the Trofeo starts from 111,003 euros gross, equating to just under 93,280 euros net. This positions the Grecale below the Ghibli.
What does that mean?
With the Grecale, Maserati has created an attractive "entry-level SUV" that will also be available in an all-electric version from 2023.
