The transition to environmentally friendly technologies will create a high demand for talent with so-called Green Skills in all areas and technical specialists.

How can employers and employees respond to this transformation? Answers are provided by the report "Automotive World of Work 2024 Outlook," which analyzes the most important international trends affecting the automotive industry and its workforce.

Employees Lack 'Green' Skills

Electric cars, autonomous driving, connectivity, and shared mobility are shaping a new era of mobility. This leads to a transformation in traditional professions and the emergence of new job profiles. According to the report, 73 percent of employers in the automotive industry worldwide are actively seeking talent with sustainability skills or plan to hire them. 76 percent of employers are already having difficulty finding qualified talent, particularly in areas such as operations & logistics (29 percent), IT & data processing (25 percent), engineering (22 percent), and manufacturing & production (19 percent).

"Only one in eight employees currently possesses multiple 'green' skills, leading to a shortage of qualified talent as companies compete for staff. Upskilling and reskilling are crucial to provide employees with the needed competencies and skills as work areas change. Retraining and further education programs support the automotive industry in adapting to the evolving world of work," says Iwona Janas, Country Manager of ManpowerGroup Germany.

For example, the European Union is promoting battery production to meet the growing demand. The ManpowerGroup is working in this field with the InnoEnergy Skills Institute to retrain up to 800,000 employees in the regional battery supply chain by 2025.

High Demand for Technical Talent for Connected Cars and Autonomous Driving

Industry experts predict that 37 percent of new passenger cars sold in 2035 will have autonomous driving functions.

With increasingly connected vehicles, the issue of cybersecurity is also gaining importance. 89 percent of car manufacturers expect that a high level of cybersecurity maturity will be a significant competitive advantage. This creates an increased demand for IT and technical specialists.

Women sought, promote qualification, strengthen flexibility

In addition to extensive retraining and further education programs, innovative recruiting methods are needed to address various applicant groups. This includes retaining and training members of Generation Z as well as promoting a higher proportion of women in the workforce, as currently only 27 percent of employees in the automotive industry worldwide are women.

Employers are also considering incentives such as salary increases (30 percent), flexible workplace options (31 percent), and entry bonuses (25 percent) to attract new employees.

"The challenge of finding qualified talents is exacerbated by an aging workforce, competition with other industries, and profound changes. As an experienced HR service provider, we support companies through professional workforce management and strategic personnel solutions to tackle the ongoing skills shortage and position themselves correctly in a phase of radical transformation," says Janas.
