Sylt continues to take a hard course towards a traffic transition – recently, the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) received the first of a total of five ordered MAN Lion’s City E buses – the remaining four electric buses are expected to arrive on the largest North Frisian island in the coming weeks.

As of January 2021, the Sylter traffic company tested the MAN Lion’s City E on the island. With a range of nearly 400 km, the new electric fleet additions can operate for a whole day without recharging, the traffic company reports.

Conversion of the SVG depot by the end of 2023

The total investment in the new technology is estimated by SVG at around 4.5 million euros – this amount includes the conversion of the depot, which will be equipped with a comprehensive charging management system. The necessary construction work is set to begin this fall and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Emission-free bus fleet in the next 5 to 6 years

According to SVG, the transition to e-mobility is "in full swing," and the fleet conversion is expected to be fully completed in the next 5-6 years. Currently, a total of 35 combustion buses are in operation on Sylt, which will gradually be replaced by electric buses.

In addition to the emission-free conversion of the bus fleet, there has been an on-demand service called SyltRide on the island since last year, complementing public transport. In partnership with door2door, Mercedes-Benz EQVs are used to pick up passengers at around 1,000 virtual stops. By offering attractive alternatives to private cars that are simple and flexible to use, SVG aims to encourage more tourists and residents to switch to public transport.

Pilot project “SyltGO! Mobility-Partner”

With the project “SyltGO! Mobility-Partner,” SVG also aims to attract island visitors to its attractive public transport offers – according to the traffic company, the subject of “sustainability of bus transport is increasingly important to customers.”

“SyltGO!” started with the Wenningstedt-Braderup Tourism Service (TSWB) in May this year and was rolled out island-wide in July. To date, more than 2,500 beds have been acquired as cooperation partners, including apartment agencies, hotels, and landlords, whose guests can use public transport free of charge with a so-called partner ticket.

“Almost all guests whom we personally received were very pleased with the opportunity to use public transport free of charge, and they used the ticket extensively,” reports Inken Yelkenli, Managing Director of König Appartement, a partner in the “SyltGO!” project.

Due to the positive feedback, “SyltGO!” will be extended. Interested businesses can become partners until the end of 2022 with the advantage that no fee will be charged until then. From 2023, a levy will be required for each guest.
