In 2023, 780 MAN Lion’s City E were registered in Europe (EU 27+3). With this, the Munich manufacturer has taken the top position in the European electric bus market with a market share of around 13.3%. This comes after MAN was lagging far behind in the European market for electric buses just a few years ago. The sales figures also speak for themselves: In 2023, the commercial vehicle manufacturer was able to sell a total of 771 E-buses, nearly tripling the sales figures for the Lion’s City E compared to the previous year (263).

Market leadership also in some national markets

However, MAN is not “just” the market leader in the overall European market, but also number 1 in the national e-bus markets of Germany (245), Sweden (126), Belgium (69), Austria (26), and Slovenia (8).

“In terms of numbers, the markets in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Norway, and Belgium are leading,” says Robert Katzer, Head of Sales & Product Bus, adding: “In these five countries, almost 80% of all Lion’s City E buses registered in Europe in 2023 are in operation.”

The markets in Spain and Norway have shown particularly strong growth in the past year — both in terms of total registrations and in new registrations of MAN e-buses: 76 Lion’s City E were put into operation in Norway and 93 in Spain. Thus, among others, the Spanish cities of Alicante, Bilbao, Málaga, San Sebastián, and Valencia are relying on the city bus with the lion emblem.

“Our 1,000th Lion’s City E, which rolled off the production line in September 2023, just under three years after the start of series production at the Polish MAN plant in Starachowice, is also operating in the Greater Madrid area and thus in Spain,” said Katzer.

The vehicle was ordered by the transport company Auto Periferia S.A., a subsidiary of the Spanish Grupo Ruiz.

Good Numbers in Scandinavia

In addition, Scandinavia is considered one of the pioneers in electromobility. This is also reflected in the registration numbers: In Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, 230 electrically powered MAN city buses were registered in the past fiscal year. In December alone, MAN brought 76 units onto the streets of the Norwegian capital Oslo. The public transport operator Unibuss had ordered the 59 solo and 17 articulated buses.
