Mahle E chargeBIG installs 28 charging points at Lorch station

Mahle E chargeBIG is moving into public spaces: The construction and operation of the charging infrastructure for the park-and-ride parking lot at Lorch station were tendered in the summer of 2022 and awarded to chargeBIG.

In the course of the project, 26 single-phase charging points with a charging capacity of max. 7.2kW and two three-phase fast charging points with a charging capacity of max. 22kW were installed. Since the P&R parking lot is mainly used by commuters and the electric vehicles thus remain parked for long periods, an intentional decision was made to forgo blocking fees for ad-hoc charging. The project was implemented with funding from the BMDV program "Local Charging Infrastructure." This allowed the city of Lorch to cover 80% of the investment with the grant money.

On February 24, 2023, at 2 p.m., the official opening ceremony took place at Lorch station. Following an official welcome by Mayor Marita Funk, Mahle E chargeBIG founder Sebastian Ewert provided insights into the chargeBIG concept and the advantages of the charging infrastructure. He then demonstrated through a live demo how the charging process can be successfully carried out, explaining how the chargeBIG app works and how easily a charging process can be started.

"Low Power" approach for uniform and complete charging at P&R parking lot

A study by the Technical University of Munich as part of the research project "Munich Electrified" confirms that the Mahle E chargeBIG charging solution is optimally suited for the electrification of P&R parking lots. The investigation was based on real usage data. The data foundation for this consisted of operational data from Park & Ride systems and billing data from public charging processes. The investigation shows that MAHLE chargeBIG, as a Low Power approach (referred to as AC18x7kW in the publication), performs convincingly both economically and technologically. For instance, despite the comparatively lower charging capacity of chargeBIG, over 95% of the requested energy could be transferred. The complete study can be downloaded via the button below.

Load Management as a Solution

The chargeBIG charging solution relies on charging capacities between 2 to 7kW to charge many vehicles simultaneously at one location. By employing dynamic and phase-specific load management, the available overall power is distributed in a grid-friendly and intelligent manner.

What does this mean?

In public areas, load management is of paramount importance. A special case is P&R parking lots: since vehicles tend to park (and charge) here for extended periods, low charging capacities spread throughout the day are sufficient, which in turn relieves the grid. Therefore, chargeBIG describes its solution with load management as the “ideal charging solution for parking areas where many electric vehicles remain parked for extended periods,” such as at airports or trade fairs, in company parking garages, on fleet operator grounds, in city logistics hubs, in residential construction, or large public parking garages.
