Mahle and Midtronics aim to develop diagnostic services for electric car batteries

The partners want to develop a workshop service for electric vehicles and have signed a letter of intent. The goal is comprehensive battery diagnostics and maintenance from a single source. A growing future market is foreseen. The battery accounts for up to a quarter of the vehicle costs.

The Swabian automotive supplier Mahle and the American service specialist Midtronics have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop service equipment for electric vehicles. The goal of the partnership is to offer workshops a safe, simple, and effective service for the important lithium-ion battery, according to the companies. The offering will range from battery diagnostics to maintenance – independent of brand and throughout the entire lifecycle of the batteries and vehicles. The Swabians want to contribute their knowledge and experience in refrigerant and fluid service, ADAS calibration, BatteryPRO solutions, and vehicle diagnostics to the partnership. The Americans contribute their technology in monitoring, inspecting, diagnosing, and maintaining low and high voltage batteries. Together, they can offer a complete service package for electric vehicle batteries, which will make up a significant part of the future business of independent workshops, the partners are convinced.

"In the era of electromobility, battery service will gain a completely new significance for independent workshops. With our partnership with Midtronics, we are opening a new chapter for service equipment," explained Georges Mourad, Director Global Service Solutions at MAHLE.

Due to the speed with which battery and electric vehicle technology are developing, no company in the automotive service world has so far been able to offer such a service, explained Will Sampson, President of Midtronics. With the transformation towards electromobility, the costs and complexity of batteries and systems for the automotive spare parts market represent one of the greatest challenges in history. The battery itself could account for over 25 percent of the total vehicle costs and varies greatly from vehicle to vehicle, according to the providers. At the same time, the proportion of vehicles with electric drive systems (battery electric and hybrid vehicles) will rise to 95 percent in Europe, 90 percent in China, and 75 percent in North America by 2035. Therefore, battery service could soon represent half of all service operations in workshops, the partners predict.
