LG Magna e-Powertrain, a joint venture between LG Electronics and Magna International Inc ., celebrated the groundbreaking for its new facility in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. The new plant will produce inverters, motors, and on-board chargers to support the production of electric vehicles from General Motors.

“The Ramos site enhances our JV’s ability to develop and produce advanced EV assemblies, and represents one of the main pillars of LG’s long-term strategy to become the innovation partner of the automotive industry,” said Eun Seok-hyun, President of the LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company.

At the groundbreaking ceremony on April 19, executives from LG Magna e-Powertrain, LG Electronics, Magna, General Motors and local government officials participated. The plant is expected to be ready for production by 2023.

"Within just over a year, we have added an expansion agreement, identified a strategic site to support our customer, and are now making our plans a reality," said Tom Rucker, president of Magna Powertrain. "The construction of a new facility is a true testament to the strength of this collaboration and this commitment to providing innovative solutions for customers to overcome their challenges. It also strengthens our active involvement in the electrification transformation, whether through eDrive sub-systems or full systems."

General Motors is the primary customer for the components of the new facility and is expected to play a key role for the Americans on the path to establishing a strong, scalable, sustainable, and North America-focused EV supply chain.

What does this mean?

GM is taking advantage of the synergies between car manufacturer Magna and electronics giant LG - but in doing so, is relinquishing its own expertise in EV drive manufacturing. Is this the right path in the long run?
