Madrid electrifies the 16th bus line

In the Spanish capital, Irizar electric buses are now in operation on the heavily frequented Line 75.

The electrification of the bus lines in Madrid is advancing rapidly: In July 2021, EMT switched to electric buses on lines 33 (Príncipe Pío-Casa de Campo) and 50 (Plaza Mayor-Avenida del Manzanares), and by the end of September, line 41 was added. In October 2021, line 81 was electrified, and currently, line 75 has been added. (Photo: EMT)

Madrid's transport operator Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) has electrified its 16th bus line in Spain's capital with Line 75 – electric buses from the Basque manufacturer Irizar now run on the route between Plaza del Callao and Colonia Manzanares. There are five buses during peak hours and four during off-peak hours, according to the press release.

The electrification of the line has not changed the timetable – on weekdays, the Irizar electric buses run from 6 AM to 9 PM at intervals of 9 to 15 minutes, and from 9 PM until the end of operations at intervals of 13 to 20 minutes.

Sustainability Strategy Madrid 360

By the year 2025, the EMT fleet is expected to achieve a 25% share of electric vehicles – this is outlined in the Madrid 360 strategic plan. Last January, EMT launched a tender for the delivery of a total of 150 standard electric buses with a base budget of almost 100 million euros.
