Lynk&Co: Restart with an Old Model
In Hall 12.1 of the Auto Mechanika, Geely was also present: with the brands Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co. And next to the stylish Z10, which explicitly is not coming to Germany, stood the well-known 01 – the debut work, which has been built since 2016 and since 2021 in Germany – well, it has quietly taken off and has since landed again. The product cycle shows that Lynk&Co takes cues from Volvo: Bringing an update after eight years(!) of runtime is bold, but: The customers are more than satisfied with the previous models!
Clearly, the basis is shared with Volvo's 40 series. The craftsmanship was beyond any doubt and the design fits as well. So why panic? And immediately David Green, Head of Strategy, Products, and Offers at Lynk & Co, explains why they did a subtle facelift after all. Because he actually sits at the end of the "customer hotline" and receives all the improvement suggestions.
And these were, for the most part, three:
First: The powertrain. Especially with the plug-in, the transition from the combustion engine to the corporate three-cylinder was always a bit jerky. Therefore, now a stronger four-cylinder has been implanted and the "handoff process" in the transmission has been smoothed out.
Second: The infotainment. By now a bit outdated, not always completely logical and by far no longer as crisp as the competition. So: new, high-resolution screen, new software and that should at least be better!
Third: The color blue! Really! Many customers couldn't get along with the blue accent in the alloy wheels and also found the partly blue upholstery made from fishing nets too blue. So Green colored the car according to its name, simply packed boring gray faux leather inside and still treated himself to neon green stitching.
The "top-sharer" earns up to 2,500 Euros a month with his 01!
The concept of renting out to other "Lynk members" without a car remains: Green knows a "top-renter" who can earn up to 2,500 Euros monthly with his 01! Although there are significant regional differences. In Scandinavia, it is hardly accepted due to sparse population, but in the Netherlands, people are very happy to share the 01.
And yes, the 01 would then be followed by more models in Europe – including fully electric ones. And adjustments will likely be made in sales and trade as well... Because in China, Lynk & Co is a huge brand with nine models by now – up to the latest Z10, which explicitly is NOT coming to Europe. Even though it would be an interesting alternative to the VW ID.7 and others. We have added the seat test...
What does this mean?
Lynk & Co is reorganizing itself – and continues to use its well-established original model to do so. It remains to be seen if this will help them recover from the slump in registrations they have nosedived into.
