The start-up company Lupa from Barcelona has announced that it plans to launch an electrically driven compact car in the B-segment by 2023. This model is intended to be the kickoff for a series of models. These will be marketed as has only been done previously by Renault, with or without a battery. According to Spanish media, the Golf-class car E26, which is to be produced in the Catalonian capital, is expected to offer a range of up to 400 kilometers and is set to start at a base price of 17,000 euros including the battery, or just 9,400 euros without the battery (net). Additionally, the company plans to introduce a small delivery van and a compact SUV in the B-segment, which is to be named SUV42. Furthermore, the young company has announced a home storage battery, which is scheduled to go into series production in 2026 and is expected to store domestically generated solar energy.

The E26 measures 4,069 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width, and 1,519 mm in height, placing it in the segment of a Peugeot e-208 or Renault Zoe. The basis is supposed to be a kind of skateboard platform that integrates a very compact drive system as well as power transmission and power electronics. The E26 features a reasonably sized, reportedly fast-charging capable 42 kWh battery, which should suffice for a range of 320 to 400 kilometers. Propulsion is provided by a compact electric motor that delivers 117 PS (87 kW) in Sport mode, dropping to 90 PS in Normal mode and 60 PS in Eco mode. The top speed is then 150, 130, and 80 km/h, respectively.

The trick with the exchangeable battery is aimed at allowing users to transfer the battery when upgrading to a new car from the same manufacturer, and to sell the chassis separately. This way, the battery gets a second life and the customer ends up with a cheaper new car since it is purchased without a battery. The provider aims to build trust with an eight-year warranty covering 160,000 kilometers. In a third life, the battery could then be used as a home storage system.
