The Hamburg-based retrofitting specialist Luis Technology is entering the French market with its turn assist system "Turn Detect." The local distribution will be handled by Electro Maintenance SA from Châteaurenard-de-Provence for the Hamburg-based company. The new partner has been active in the market since 1978 and specializes in accessories and equipment for industrial vehicles. It is represented on the aftermarket and OEM market with its 1,500 sales outlets throughout France. According to Luis, this will ensure good support in the French market.

In the approval of new vehicle types, the EU mandates, as Luis explains in a press release, that turn assist systems for trucks will be required starting in 2022. As of 2024, the regulation applies to every newly registered truck. The corresponding regulation also specifies the required features for the assist systems. A system with just a camera and monitor is not sufficient. It must additionally provide an active warning through optical or acoustic signals. Luis' turn assist systems meet these criteria.

The Hamburg-based company was one of the first to bring an eligible turning assistant to the German market. In mid-March 2019, it received the General Operating Permit (ABE) from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). According to company statistics, Luis has already sold more than 20,000 turning assistants in Germany, which are now also approved in Austria.

Martin Groschke and Matthias Feistel, managing partners of Luis Technology, highlight that major truck manufacturers are also offering the turning assistants as special equipment.

“The high demand in Germany and Austria has prompted us to expand our production capacities. We are therefore well prepared for additional distribution in France as well.”

The system from Luis can be retrofitted regardless of vehicle type and class. It is camera- and software-based and filters out static objects. According to the manufacturer, it detects cyclists riding up to six meters to the side of the truck. These cyclists are considered to be particularly at risk. According to research by the German Federal Highway Research Institute, 70 percent of turning accidents resulted in collisions with these cyclists.
