LNG trucks in high demand

Sales volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel to diesel more than tripled in 2020. Almost 90 percent of the vehicles requested under the EEN subsidy program are LNG trucks.

Natural gas is becoming increasingly popular among logistics companies – probably because it is considered a low-emission fuel and can be operated as biomethane in an almost climate-neutral manner. According to the German gas industry, the LNG sales at German LNG filling stations tripled in 2020 compared to the previous year. This trend is confirmed by a high demand for LNG trucks under the funding program "Energy-Efficient and/or CO2-Low Heavy Commercial Vehicles" (EEN) introduced in 2018. Approximately 87 percent of the funding applications received by the end of 2020 were for LNG vehicles, with a further 12 percent for vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). This is shown by a survey conducted by the industry initiative Zukunft Gas.

“The alternative fuel natural gas is practically indispensable in heavy-duty transportation – especially in the form of LNG. Logistics companies benefit not only from long ranges and quick refueling processes without unnecessary downtime," advertises board member Timm Kehler.

Financially, a switch is also worthwhile thanks to the toll exemption, which is valid until 2022. And with the continuation of vehicle promotion within the fleet replacement program for trucks, the legislature additionally supports the market ramp-up, says Kehler. The expansion of gas stations is also progressing. According to Zukunft Erdgas, the number of LNG stations nationwide has risen to 46. Many more stations are expected to start operating in 2021.

Better than Fossil: Increasingly on Bio-LNG

As the industry initiative calculates, in 2020 alone, the sale of nearly 48,000 tons of LNG compared to diesel vehicles avoided CO2eq emissions of about 36,500 tons. Zukunft Gas is also increasingly focusing on Bio-LNG in the long term so that vehicles can be almost climate-neutral. With natural gas, the emission of nitrogen oxides and fine dust is also significantly reduced. Compared to their diesel counterparts, gas trucks also have 50 percent lower noise emissions. This makes natural gas vehicles particularly suitable for nighttime deliveries in urban areas.

Within the framework of the "Energy-efficient and/or CO2-low heavy commercial vehicles" (EEN) funding program, initiated in mid-2018, gas trucks were also primarily requested. Of the 5,034 vehicles for which funding was applied for by the end of 2020, 4,355 run on LNG. This corresponds to 87 percent of all funding applications. Another twelve percent went to CNG commercial vehicles.

"As a practical solution for effective environmental protection, natural gas vehicles have also proven themselves in the Corona crisis year," summarizes Kehler.

Gas station operators also reacted to this positive development, says Kehler. At more than 50 percent of all gas stations in Germany, natural gas drivers can already fill up with 100 percent biogas. This makes them almost climate-neutral on the road. From his perspective, natural gas is "fit for the future."
