Lightblick analysis reveals rip-off at the charging station
Electric car drivers sometimes have to pay significantly higher prices at charging stations compared to conventional household electricity. This was confirmed by an analysis from the statistics portal statista commissioned by the Hamburg-based green electricity provider Lichtblick. According to a report by Spiegel Online, electricity at standard charging stations is up to 49 percent more expensive, and at fast-charging stations even up to 140 percent more expensive. If you power a VW ID.3 for 100 kilometers, it would cost 6.68 euros instead of 4.48 euros like at home, and in the worst case, even 10.77 euros at a fast charger. Especially for customers without a contract, the rates are very high and can be 25 to 100 percent, in some cases even up to 300 percent higher than the rate for regular customers.
The electricity provider criticizes that consumers often have no choice. Although there are now over 1,000 operators nationwide according to statista, the regional offer often lies in one hand. Lichtblick spokesperson Ralph Kampwirth told the medium that the data shows a clear case of market failure. The Federal Cartel Office is also monitoring the development and is currently conducting a "sector investigation" of the charging station market. The findings align with VM's own experiences during tours through Germany, where high costs were often incurred.
