Lexus UX 300e Update: Larger Battery for 450 Kilometers Range
The Toyota Group is also gradually accelerating its move towards full electrification. Now, a major update for the compact SUV of its subsidiary Lexus is making progress in terms of range. The UX 300e was the first BEV in the company and is getting a larger battery that is expected to increase the range by more than 40 percent. However, the delivery of the new models in Germany is not scheduled until May 2023. The battery capacity increases from 54.3 kWh to 72.8 kWh, and the previously modest range from 315 to 450 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. This would correspond to a reasonable consumption of 16.7 kWh/100 km. Versions with 18-inch wheels instead of the 17-inch ones manage ten kilometers less. The front axle continues to be powered by the 150-kW synchronous motor with 300 Nm of torque.
In addition, fine-tuning of the electromechanical power steering and shock absorbers, as well as the stiffness of the body through additional welding points, is expected to improve responsiveness and driving feel, and enhanced insulation should allow for fewer disturbances within the cabin.
Better Voice Recognition and Control
The compact SUV also features a user-friendly multimedia system with a touchscreen measuring either eight or twelve inches, depending on the equipment. The new display, which has been moved 143 millimeters forward and closer to the driver, replaces the previous touchpad control. The 12.3-inch display provides HD resolution and a faster response to control commands thanks to higher processor performance. The voice recognition function of the multimedia system now includes the on-board assistant "Hey Lexus" for inputting voice commands, such as controlling the air conditioning or starting phone calls. The vehicle can connect to a smartphone via Android Auto or wirelessly through Apple CarPlay.
Practical: Storage in Place of Redundant Touchpad
The smartphone app Lexus Link is also integrated, allowing users to lock and unlock the doors and set the air conditioning or heating remotely. Standard features include cloud-based navigation with real-time access to road and traffic information. Information about parking options or toll fees can also be retrieved from the cloud via voice command. Depending on the equipment, the control of the seat heating or another small storage compartment is located in the center console where the multimedia touchpad used to be. A USB-A port in the center console plays high-resolution music sources, while two additional USB-C ports are available for charging mobile devices.
