Outside of Great Britain, they remain rare, even though they have long been available in light ivory or many other colors besides black: the "Black Cabs" alias London taxis. The TX with range extender is increasingly replacing its predecessor TX4, especially in London, where it is almost an integral part of the city's landscape. Currently, more than 40% of the official taxis are now TX models, with over 6,000 vehicles in operation in the capital, highlighting the transition from fossil fuels to electromobility.
With the rising sales, the positive contribution that LEVC’s TX makes to air quality is also growing. Powered by its revolutionary eCity technology, LEVC’s electric TX taxi has since its introduction in 2018 traveled over 534 million miles worldwide and prevented the emission of 162,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Alex Nan, CEO of LEVC, commented:
“We are currently experiencing a significant turning point towards more environmentally friendly transport options, as the TX has surpassed the diesel-powered TX4 as the taxi of choice in London. Currently, there are more than 6,000 TX electric taxis in operation in the capital, making up over 40% of the taxi fleet.”
Helen Chapman, Director of Licensing and Regulation at Transport for London, added:
“It is great to see that almost half of the entire taxi fleet is now emissions-free and that there are now more LEVC TX taxis than all other diesel taxis in the capital. In addition to reducing emissions, these modern vehicles offer a truly comfortable experience for both the driver and the passenger.”
She added:
“London’s taxi drivers are rightly proud to be at the forefront of cleaning up the toxic air in the city. The gradual shift of the taxi fleet to emissions-free vehicles is an important part of the bold measures the Mayor is taking to tackle the health crisis caused by deadly air pollution and to address the climate emergency.”
The TX taxi is an accessible and inclusive vehicle for everyone, regardless of age or disability. The vehicle offers flexible space for up to six passengers and features an integrated wheelchair ramp which allows the TX to transport a forward-facing wheelchair — the only taxi of its kind that can do so.
LEVC has recently announced a new brand strategy to become a leading company for carbon-free mobility technology. LEVC's new direction entails growing beyond mere vehicle assembly and committing to providing intelligent, environmentally-friendly, safe, and accessible mobility solutions for more people than ever before.
What does that mean?
The “Black Cab” is iconic in London and Great Britain. Now, the electric vehicle with range extender has surpassed the stock of its diesel predecessor and constitutes the majority of the legendary London Cabs. However, as its sibling, the van VN5, is slow to gain traction and the production numbers of both expensive siblings have not increased as expected, LEVC will focus even more on services and digital solutions in the future.
