Leave the car: Car-fasting campaign begins in Thuringia

(dpa/th) Traditionally, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It's about abstinence and alternatives - not only in terms of food but also in mobility. Car fasting is also an option.

The "Autofasten" campaign started on Ash Wednesday in Thuringia. It aims to encourage people to reflect on their mobility habits and, during Lent up until Holy Saturday (March 30), to occasionally leave their cars behind and use alternatives. Offers such as "fasting tickets" for bus travel in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, as well as additional information on public transportation or carsharing, are intended to make the transition easier for Thuringians.

The "Autofasten" campaign, which has a tradition of several years, is supported, among others, by the association "Bus & Bahn Thüringen," the Central Thuringia transport association, the Protestant and Catholic churches, associations, and municipalities. There are more than 70 partners from the fields of mobility, environment, tourism, economy, and politics. The Deutschlandticket had already led to higher demand for public transportation services.

The Car Fasting campaign has also aimed to make a statement for climate protection since 2011. Since last year, this has been emphasized by planting trees that are better suited to climate change than the typical spruce trees in Thuringia. According to their own statements, "Bus & Bahn Thüringen" and the two churches want to establish a diverse "Car Fasting Forest" in the Schwarzatal region of East Thuringia. The 4.7-hectare forest will be managed by the Gehren Forestry Office. It is growing in an area where a spruce population has almost completely died due to drought and bark beetle infestation.
