LeasePlan Fleet Sustainability Ranking: Financial and Service Sector Drives the Greenest

The first edition of Ayvens' sustainability report sees the financial sector leading in electrification, which, however, is developing sluggishly overall: The study covers 29 countries and evaluates the passenger car fleet of international customer fleets in various sectors based on four criteria: proportion of diesel, BEV, PHEV and CO2 emissions.

LeasePlan Germany has published the first edition of the "Fleet Sustainability Ranking by Industry" by Ayvens. According to this, the financial and services sector is the most advanced in sustainable fleet management, showing the lowest diesel share, the second-highest BEV share, and the lowest CO2 emissions. Switching to low-emission or zero-emission vehicles is one of the easiest ways for companies to reduce their overall CO2 emissions. Currently, approximately 20 percent of CO2 emissions in the European Union are attributed to road transport. The industry ranking and the individual sector benchmarks examined how quickly the different sectors are transitioning to low-emission and zero-emission vehicles and how much CO2 they can save in the process, outlines the report.

With the lowest average CO2 emissions and the smallest diesel share in the fleet, combined with the second-highest share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the financial and services sector has reached the top spot. The technology sector comes in second among the most sustainable industries, only nine points behind the financial and services sector. While the share of diesel vehicles in fleets is decreasing across all sectors, the pace varies significantly by sector. The financial and services sector has the lowest diesel share per fleet - however, the construction industry has seen the largest decline in the last two years: while in 2021, 61% of leased vehicles per fleet were diesel-powered, by 2023 this figure has fallen to only 22%.

Only three industries reduced the proportion of petrol vehicles, otherwise it increased

Only three industries (technology, healthcare, and finance and services) have reduced the proportion of petrol vehicles in their fleets since 2021. In the other industries, this proportion has remained the same or even increased. The largest increase occurred in the transport industry (+8 percentage points) and in construction (+7 percentage points). The proportion of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has more than doubled in the past two years – most significantly in the construction industry, where the proportion of BEVs nearly quintupled between 2021 (7%) and 2023 (32%). While more BEVs are being used in all sectors, the healthcare sector lags behind other industries with a share of 11% (2023). Industry Benchmarks As part of the "Fleet Sustainability Ranking by Industry," benchmarks for seven of the evaluated industries were also developed. Overall, certain trends can be observed across all industries, especially regarding the average CO2 emissions and the types of drive systems in the fleets by country.
