Large order for Mercedes-Benz: Amazon orders 202 eActros 600

It is the largest electric truck order for Mercedes-Benz Trucks to date and also Amazon's largest order for electric trucks. 202 long-haul models of the type eActros 600 are scheduled to complement the existing transport network by 2025.

Major announcement to start the year – the online giant Amazon has ordered 202 battery-electric trucks of the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 model from Daimler Truck. 147 of them are expected to operate in the UK and 55 in Germany. It is Amazon's largest order for electric trucks to date, and at the same time, the largest order for electric trucks in the history of the commercial vehicle manufacturer.

"The order of more than 200 eActros 600 underscores our commitment to take a leading role in the electrification of our transport network in Europe. It is the largest order of electric trucks by Amazon worldwide so far and represents an important step towards fulfilling our Climate Pledge to operate all our business areas CO2-neutral by 2040,” said Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Worldwide Operations Sustainability at Amazon.

"We are very pleased that Amazon, as a pioneer in the transformation towards alternative drives, has chosen the eActros 600 – the new standard for sustainable transport," said Karin Rådström, Chairwoman of the Board of Management of Daimler Truck Holding AG.

The electric trucks are to be operated in Amazon's "middle-mile network." There, they transport freight containers to and from Amazon's fulfillment centers, sorting centers, and delivery stations. The emission-free vehicles are expected to travel more than 20 million kilometers per year collectively and transport over 350 million packages without exhaust emissions.

Daily ranges of 500 to 1,000 kilometers possible

The order is preceded by the practical test of a near-series prototype of the eActros 600 at one of Amazon's logistics centers in Germany. The long-haul truck has a battery capacity of a good 600 kilowatt-hours – hence the type designation 600 – as well as a new, particularly efficient electric drive axle developed in-house. According to the manufacturer, this should make it possible to achieve ranges of 500 kilometers without intermediate charging, even with a total train weight of 40 tons. With intermediate charging during the legally required driver breaks - even without megawatt charging (MCS) - over 1,000 kilometers should be possible in a day. In addition to CCS charging with up to 400 kW, the vehicle will also allow megawatt charging in the future.

Fuel Cell Truck Mercedes-Benz GenH2 at Amazon

Daimler Truck is working very closely with Amazon on customer-oriented vehicle tests. In addition to the prototype practical test in one of Amazon's logistics centers in Germany, the company is also involved in practical tests of the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 fuel cell truck on public roads. Amazon is using the GenH2 truck in its logistics network in Germany.

According to the manufacturer, the performance of the GenH2 truck, which is powered by liquid hydrogen as an energy carrier, is comparable to conventional long-haul trucks. The trucks used in the customer-oriented trials offer a total vehicle weight of 40 tons with a payload of around 25 tons. They are expected to have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers. The high payload and long range are achieved through two special liquid hydrogen tanks and a fuel cell system from Cellcentric, the joint venture of Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group. They form the heart of the GenH2 truck.

Climate-Neutral Transport Network by 2040

Amazon has been making great efforts for some time to decarbonize its logistics network. The online retailer aims to be CO2-neutral by 2040.

In product distribution, the company relies on fully electric delivery vehicles of the Rivian EDV type, which Amazon is also bringing to the roads in Germany. Amazon's subcontractors, who carry out the actual deliveries to customers, can finance the Rivian EDV through a leasing partner arranged by Amazon. And in Berlin, the online retailer recently opened a new micromobility center for delivery with electrically assisted cargo bikes from the automotive supplier Mubea. There, more than 1.5 million packages are to be delivered annually by cargo bikes.
