L.A. Autoshow 2021: Mullen Five - made in Mississippi starting in 2024
Mullen was actually founded in 2002. In 2007, they built the "Mullen GT" – a soap-like roadster, while in 2009 Coda Automotive was launched, where in 2014 they introduced an electric mid-size sedan with a range of 142 kilometers in collaboration with Chinese electric car manufacturer Qiantu. In 2014, David Michery united several Mullen brands and Coda under the umbrella of Mullen Technology, which features the Rockies in its logo, rising behind the Southern California headquarters.
While the initial automotive endeavors were more technical and visual footnotes, the "Five," in terms of design, dimensions, and package, might have what it takes to be a "world car." However, Mullen has remained rather secretive regarding the technical details. What is clear is that the Five is built on a skateboard platform that offers various drive configurations, starting with all-wheel drive.
The battery capacity of the "Base," simply called "EV," is certainly generous, with Mullen indicating 95 kWh, which should be sufficient for up to 520 kilometers of range. It is expected to accelerate to 100 km/h in just over three seconds, with the top speed governed at 250 km/h. This suggests power levels in the range of 300 kW plus. There will also be an RS version, capable of reaching up to 320 km/h, which accelerates to 100 km/h in the low twos, indicating 400 kW plus x. Between the "EV" and the "RS," the four-seater "Touring" will serve as a sporty comfort version.
Visually, the Mullen Five looks understated and elegant – a rounded but elegant SUV-coupé body refined with deliberately placed accents. Inside, the "Five" is also elegantly and high-quality designed, with subtle US touches including wood and beige surfaces. The rear features individual seats, a generous center console, and fold-out tables.
All this at prices between around $55,000 and $75,000 (which is approximately €49,000 to €66,000). The Five is to be manufactured in Tunica, Mississippi, a roadside village with high unemployment and, so far, no area identifiable on Google Maps for automobile manufacturing. The 127,000 square feet are to be expanded to 1.2 million square feet, including body shell construction and paint shop along with final assembly. Pre-orders are already possible. A deposit of $100 is required for this. Production is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2023, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2024.
What does this mean?
The Five is an aesthetically pleasing premium SUV coupe with powerful engines – yet affordable. However, the Californians still leave many questions unanswered and compete here, despite big announcements, with a "me-too product" alongside Tesla and others. Formats and prices would also suit Asia or Europe.
