Konvekta: Vehicle air conditioning for e-buses saves 4,500 tons of CO2
Electric heaters in e-buses are real energy guzzlers: To generate one kilowatt of heating energy, the system consumes 1.1 to 1.23 kWh of energy. Up to 50% of the available energy in the batteries is needed for heating on cold days. In contrast, CO2 heat pump systems are the innovative alternative. By combining know-how, experience, and choosing the natural refrigerant CO2, Konvekta CO2 systems achieve the highest efficiency. For 1 kW of heating output, these systems optimally require only 0.21 kW of energy from the battery.
The system draws up to 75% of the needed heat or cold not from battery power, but from the environment. This results in an annual saving of approximately 1,700 euros per vehicle and, depending on the vehicle, up to 4,800 kg of CO2. When adding up all vehicles with a Konvekta CO2 heat pump, the total savings amount to approximately 4,500 tons of CO2 for the year 2021.
Future-proof and economical
The Konvekta CO2 heat pump systems have been available on the market as a series product since 2018 and are already in use across Europe, from Sweden to the United Kingdom to Italy. Over 1,300 buses and rail vehicles are currently operated with the alternative refrigerant CO2. More than 100 public transport companies in about 40 countries now use the systems in their bus fleets.
