Jeep Wagoneer S: Jeep's grand global electric future

In 1963, Jeep introduced the first SUV with the Wagoneer. Just over six decades later, the first electric Jeep SUV on the STLA Large platform follows.

Stellantis is gradually rolling out its large platform: Following the Dodge Charger, the 4.89-meter-long Jeep Wagoneer S is next. It will initially be launched in the USA and Canada, with Europe and other markets to follow later. Antonio Filosa, CEO of the Jeep brand, proudly explains:

“This first global electric vehicle will offer a new generation of owners an experience that is unmistakably Jeep and 100% electric in every way.”

Visually, we can give the all-clear: The Wagoneer S remains instantly recognizable as a Jeep with its seven-slot grille, which illuminates as you approach the vehicle. Great emphasis was placed on aerodynamics: The windshield is flat, the roofline slopes slightly towards the rear, ending in a roof spoiler. Integrated door handles and a smooth underbody are designed to contribute to a strong drag coefficient of 0.29.

Jeep claims a range of over 300 miles (according to the stringent US cycle), approximately 480 kilometers. This means that in real-world conditions, it can always cover 400 actual kilometers plus a bit more. There is no shortage of power: It offers a 250 kW (340 PS) electric motor per axle, resulting in a combined system output of 441 kW (600 PS). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and generates more than 800 Nm of torque.

Five driving modes for confident progress

And it comes standard with fully electric all-wheel drive for confident on- and off-road performance. The electric drive modules (EDM) developed by Stellantis independently drive the front and rear wheels to deliver instant torque. Exclusive to Jeep is the traction management system “SelecTerrain” with five different driving modes: Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, Sand.

The 3-in-1 EDMs combine the electric motor, transmission, and power electronics into a single, compact unit that is both efficient and powerful. The front unit can be disengaged to reduce energy consumption and thus increase range. Surprisingly, Jeep opted out of 800-volt technology – but despite the “only” 400 volts, the 100 kW/h battery is still expected to charge from 20 to 80 percent within 23 minutes.

Interior: Up to four displays, rather modest trunk volume

The cockpit features four displays with a usable screen diagonal of over 45 inches, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch passenger touchscreen. Jeep also abandons the round steering wheel, and the electronic door openers can be activated with a light touch of the thumb. The initial equipment in the USA includes heated and ventilated rear seats as standard. Less impressive: the rather mediocre trunk volume of 484 liters, complemented by a 58-liter frunk.

A McIntosh audio system with 19 speakers and 1,160 watts should ensure rich sound. And, of course, there are also recycled materials here: the seat covers are made of a leather-free plastic, the headliner of premium microfiber suede, and the carpets of recycled materials. We expect the prices to be around 100,000 euros for the base model.

What does this mean?

The Americans are coming back: Practically at the same time as the Cadillac Optiq, Jeep presented the Wagoneer S, which, however, clearly ranks above the Caddy in terms of size and performance. It will be interesting to see how the electric Jeep performs in Europe. The basic data is promising – and if ordered with a striking red interior, it also brings the US feeling.
