Jaguar Land Rover trains hundreds of employees in data literacy

Jaguar Land Rover is conducting the largest data literacy training program in the UK with the Multiverse Data Fellowship – with more than 600 enrolled employees. The 15-month course covers topics such as data modeling, analysis, Python, and machine learning.

Data is the new oil that is supposed to keep businesses running. Jaguar Land Rover sees it that way too and is training its employees. The Data Fellowship will support employees in building their personal data competence, promote collaboration, and facilitate working with data in the cloud.

More than 600 JLR employees are participating in the special data training program, which was launched last August by the JLR Learning Academy and the Enterprise Data Office in collaboration with the tech startup Multiverse. Another 400 employees are expected to start the course throughout this year. The program aims to advance the company’s digital transformation.

First measurable successes after just six months

Measurable successes are already evident: By creating a special dashboard for maintenance managers, Kamil Poreda, Facilities Monitoring Controller and participant in the Data Fellowship, was able to help identify inefficiencies in production – just six months after joining the program. Thanks to these insights into the performance of the production lines, the entire team at JLR’s Solihull plant was able to increase the production of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport by more than 600 vehicles per week. This led to additional weekly revenue of more than 50 million pounds sterling and enabled faster vehicle delivery to customers. Poreda proudly reports:

“The opportunity to expand my knowledge of data and apply it to my daily work in manufacturing has been truly motivating. I was able to make a small but impactful change that increased production levels. The Data Fellowship program has advanced me as an employee and the company as a whole.”

As the automotive industry moves towards an electric age and processes ever larger amounts of data, JLR is focusing on creating a data-oriented mindset. Digital transformation is essential to strengthen growth, improve the customer experience, increase productivity, and at the same time enhance employee expertise. Anthony Battle, Group Chief Digital and Information Officer at JLR, explains:

“The data training program from Multiverse is transforming our company’s ability to harness the power of data. It enables us to make better decisions, transition to innovations faster, and deliver even more fascinating modern luxury vehicles to our customers. Our employees are being equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to gain valuable insights and advance our entire company. Multiverse is an important partner on this journey. We look forward to further collaboration to unlock the full spectrum of our data-driven future.”

Euan Blair, Founder and CEO of Multiverse, added:

"JLR's apprenticeship program is the largest data upskilling initiative nationwide. Through the possibilities of Applied Learning, it brings forth hundreds of new data specialists. The results clearly show that the participants in these programs not only create real added value for JLR but also significantly advance their own careers. It gives them direct access to skills that are at the core of the work of the future." Insufficient data competence is estimated to cost businesses in the United Kingdom £2 billion per year – with one in ten jobs requiring data knowledge (according to The Royal Society, Dynamics of Data Science Skill) and around 100,000 positions in data processing unfilled (according to The European Data Market Monitoring Tool)."

What does this mean?

Digital upskilling increases efficiency but is not easily accessible for everyone everywhere. Multiverse is trying to close this skills gap by offering training as an extraordinary alternative to university and corporate education. Currently, Multiverse is training over 8,000 people in the fields of technology, leadership, and digitization.
