The US online wholesaler Amazon has ordered a total of 1,064 Iveco S-Way CNG tractor units and has already taken over the first 216 vehicles, which are operated by partners throughout Europe. A further 848 units will be delivered from mid-2022. The models are powered by Cursor 13 natural gas engines from FPT Industrial. Additionally, the largest available 1,052-liter CNG tanks are installed, allowing a range of up to 620 kilometers between refueling stops. The vehicles to be delivered in 2022 are equipped with Driver Pal, the voice-controlled driver companion with Amazon Alexa features.

"We have been pioneering gas engine technology for 25 years, developing solutions that enable operators to significantly reduce their emissions now. The collaboration with world-leading companies like Amazon is proof of the reliability of our innovative products and our commitment to achieving the road freight decarbonization target by 2050," said Gerrit Marx, designated Chief Executive Officer of the Iveco Group.

The Iveco Group will continue to play a pioneering role in combustion engines that can be operated with renewable fuels. This is the only practical solution already available on the market at scale to reduce emissions. Moreover, a CNG truck running on biomethane can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95 percent in a well-to-wheel analysis compared to diesel, thus effectively contributing to decarbonization, Marx further argues.

What does this mean?

Amazon combines CNG technology with its own Amazon Alexa to create an environmentally friendly logistics solution.
