In the future, Irizar will also offer drives with compressed (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The new range includes the i4 and i3le models ranging from 12 to 15 meters in length in the CNG versions, as well as i4, i6, and i6S (12 to 15 m) in the LNG versions, all of which are built on Scania chassis. The first vehicle equipped with this technology is the i4 model (Class II), a versatile coach for city, commuter, school, or business use. The 12.92-meter-long vehicle for H-gas features a Scania CNG chassis of type K320 EB 4X2 E6D. Four type IV longitudinal CNG tanks are used, with a total volume of 1,260 liters, an approximate gas capacity of 240 kg, and a total weight of around 750 kg. They are form-fitted and aesthetically integrated into the clad roof structures. To increase the range, an additional tank can be installed. The refueling unit has two gas outlets and a manometer.

Dimensions like the diesel model

The CNG model of the i4 is equipped with the same air conditioning system as the diesel vehicle. The interior ceiling height, the interior luggage racks, and the luggage compartment capacity are also identical to the diesel version. The driver has a control screen for the gas system, which lists all safety protocols. These are used to detect leaks and monitor the potential activation of the water additive aerosol fire extinguishing system. The vehicles also comply with roll-over regulation R66.02, even considering the additional weight of 700 kg on the roof, and meet the thermal and mechanical safety requirements according to regulation 110.

Up to 1,000 km range

In the future, Irizar can offer a complete drive range thanks to the new natural gas buses – from Euro-6D diesel, HVO, and biodiesel to electric models including coaches with parallel hybrid technology. According to Irizar, the CNG and LNG technology can reduce CO2 emissions by 20 to 25%, NOx emissions by up to 60%, and particulate emissions by more than 98%. Additionally, it reduces vibrations and noise emissions by 4 to 5 dB(A). The operating cost advantage over diesel buses is estimated by the Basques to be around 35%. The vehicles have a range of up to 500 km in the CNG version, and even up to 1,000 km with LNG technology.

What does this mean?

Especially in the niche of intercity and mid-range travel, natural gas can make absolute sense.
