The on-demand shuttle service by ioki in Hamburg will be extended by another year. The joint project between Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg Holstein GmbH (VHH) and ioki, the subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn for intelligent on-demand mobility, represents a public transport service without a fixed schedule or routes. It is fully integrated into the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv) and has been bringing passengers to their destinations on demand since 2018. The service is operated with 24 LEVC TX shuttles, which can travel a distance of 101 kilometers fully electrically. If needed, a range extender petrol engine provides an additional 410 kilometers of range, as advertised by the British subsidiary of the Chinese Geely Group. The leasing partner of the project is Alphabet Fuhrparkmanagement GmbH.

So far, 110 vehicles in operation across Germany

The LEVC TX is based on the legendary London Taxi, which has been produced by LEVC as an electric vehicle with a range extender since 2017. Currently, over 15 transport associations already use the TX to complement public transport services with shuttle services. Nationwide, around 110 vehicles of the Geely subsidiary are in daily operation, according to the manufacturer. In addition to the electric and mostly emission-free operation of the Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV), the spacious interior and the compact turning circle are noteworthy. The standard built-in ramp for wheelchair users complies with the regulations for accessibility in public transport that have been in place since January 1, 2022.

Real Laboratory Hamburg: Award-Winning Project

Since mid-2018, the on-demand shuttles ioki Hamburg have been operating in the Hamburg districts of Osdorf and Lurup, and since autumn 2019, also in Billbrook. In December 2020, as part of the Real Laboratory Hamburg and in cooperation with the city of Ahrensburg and the district of Stormarn, ioki Hamburg services were added in Ahrensburg and the Brunsbek/Lütjensee/Trittau area. The project was awarded the German Mobility Award by the Federal Ministry of Transport in 2019. Over 580,000 passengers have already used the shuttle service in the districts of Lurup, Osdorf, and Billbrook as well as in Ahrensburg and Brunsbek in the past three and a half years. Over 2.6 million passenger kilometers have been covered.

Well-Booked Even During the Pandemic

The fact that ioki Hamburg's on-demand service also functions during the COVID-19 pandemic is shown by a recent study by the Technical University of Hamburg, which has been scientifically accompanying the project since its inception. According to the study, 52 percent of regular passengers remained loyal to the service even during lockdown, home office, and curfew times. 28 percent even used the shuttles more frequently during this period than before the pandemic.

"The TX is the ideal vehicle to complement public transport with shuttle services during off-peak times or on less-used routes. As an environmentally friendly electric vehicle, it reliably, comfortably, cleanly, and quietly brings passengers to their destination. And mobility providers benefit from its high reliability and low maintenance costs," promotes Martin Rada, Managing Director Europe of LEVC.

Toralf Müller, Managing Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH) sees the extension of the service as a confirmation of the chosen path.

"Public transport-oriented on-demand services like ioki Hamburg are not competitors but valuable complements on the first and last mile," Müller continues.

The vehicles themselves are also well-received. Passengers especially appreciate that they are emission-free and barrier-free electric cars. The special design of the TX also contributes to the acceptance of the service.
