Infineon defies sluggish demand for electric cars - Electrification as a driver

The Munich-based chip manufacturer Infineon remains optimistic about the electric vehicle segment despite the current demand weakness. "Electromobility remains one of the biggest growth drivers for us, especially since twice as many semiconductors are installed here compared to combustion engines," CFO Sven Schneider told "Euro." Especially in China, which accounts for two-thirds of the global market for electromobility, sales continue to develop strongly.

The manager sees potential primarily in so-called microcontrollers, i.e., electronic control units for infotainment and driver assistance systems. In 2023, Infineon moved from second place to the top spot globally in this area, with an increase of 4.4 percentage points to 28.5 percent worldwide, surpassing Renesas, as shown by a current analysis from the Canadian market researcher Techinsights. "We aim to double sales in this segment to six billion euros over the next five years," Schneider said.
