Impending Job Cuts at Tesla: FDP Demands Swift Action - Musk Denies Rumors

(dpa) What's next for Tesla in Grünheide? The Left and FDP criticize the Brandenburg state government - for different reasons. And the automaker refutes the rumors of cutting 3,000 jobs. It is merely under review, they say.

In view of the impending job cuts at the Tesla plant in Grünheide, the Brandenburg FDP has called on the state government to take immediate action. The FDP's top candidate for the state election, Zyon Braun, urged Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) to do everything possible to save the jobs.

"Prime Minister Woidke must take the next flight to Los Angeles to talk to Elon Musk about saving jobs in Brandenburg. All other appointments and commitments must now take a back seat," Braun announced.

Musk wants to cut more than every tenth job

Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to cut more than every tenth job in the company worldwide due to the slump in the electric car market and weak sales. There were initially no details on whether and how many jobs at Tesla's only European plant in Grünheide near Berlin could be affected. According to "Handelsblatt," around 3,000 of the 12,500 employees in Grünheide are to be laid off.

Politics in contact with the company

Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs Jörg Steinbach (SPD) expects that in the event of a reduction in personnel in Grünheide, far fewer than 3,000 jobs will be lost. Steinbach stated upon request:

"The drop in electric car sales in Germany and Europe is unlikely to pass by even a market leader like Tesla without a trace."

He is in contact with the company.

"If there should be a job reduction at Tesla in Grünheide, according to our information the number of jobs is likely to be significantly lower than 3,000."

Turnaround in Economic Policy Needed

The chairman of the Left Party faction in the parliament, Sebastian Walter, accused the state government of lacking a strategy.

"It is coming back to haunt that the state government, devoid of any strategy, is trying to make Brandenburg future-proof and solely relied on the lighthouse project in Grünheide. Now it must make a turnaround in economic policy and finally take care of the medium-sized businesses, as they are the backbone of Brandenburg's economy."

"Cozying up to Musk" has led to a dangerous dependency.

Tesla Denies Rumors: Completely Baseless

The US car manufacturer Tesla is considering job cuts at its only European plant in Grünheide near Berlin, but at the same time dismissed reports of 3,000 affected positions in the factory. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in light of the slump in the market for electric cars and weak global sales, plans to cut more than one in ten jobs in the company, as he mentioned in an internal email. "We are convinced that only an efficient and lean organization is well-prepared for future challenges. Our experience shows that this approach significantly contributes to our success," a Tesla spokeswoman in Grünheide said upon inquiry on Tuesday.

Regarding the announced job cuts, it was stated: "We are examining this measure and will pursue it for the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in compliance with all labor law and co-determination requirements, involving the works council." The number of 3,000 affected positions mentioned in media reports is "completely baseless." No specific information was initially provided on how many jobs at the electric car manufacturer in Grünheide could be affected. More than 12,000 people now work at the Grünheide plant.
