Vice President Europe Uwe Geissinger emphasizes the importance of the automotive industry for Europe. Magna is one of the largest automotive suppliers and manufacturers in the world and is leading in key technologies. In his view, production should also remain in Europe – Magna is currently building a new plant for electric motors in a joint venture with LG in Hungary, creating European jobs.

Car of the Future

According to Senior Vice President Jörg Grotendorst, the car of the future doesn't actually exist. Rather, there are many vehicles of the future, ranging from micro cars to autonomous shuttles and trucks, and perhaps even urban air taxis or supercars. Individualization is increasing, and connectivity and environmental friendliness are becoming more important. Here, Magna is focusing on e-mobility.

The already presented innovations such as Mezzo Plus, where the front of the vehicle can become a communication area, and the Morphing Surfaces – various surfaces at the front of the vehicle can deform as needed to, for example, change the aerodynamics – can be seen live at the trade fair.

Camera Module with Long Range Vision

The new camera generation will first be installed by a European OEM, Grotendorst explains. The complete forward-facing camera system offers a wide field of view with opening angles of 120 degrees horizontally and 48 degrees vertically. This allows for the extensive perception of obstacles located more than 160 meters in front of the vehicle as well as the detection of lateral objects, such as traffic lights, emergency vehicles, and cut-in vehicles. The camera offers a resolution of eight megapixels.

The Gen5 front camera module system is manufactured in Magna's plants in Germany, Slovakia, and China. It features a resolution, a frame rate of 36 frames per second, and a full-color image. The microcontroller is scalable for sensor fusion with up to five radars.

“We are committed to offering state-of-the-art solutions and innovations that prioritize the safety of all road users,” explains Sharath Reddy, Senior Vice President of Magna Electronics. “With our latest generation of front camera modules, we advance driver assistance by providing essential functions that keep the driver alert and give them real-time insights into the traffic, thereby offering a comprehensive understanding of their surroundings.”

Joint Venture with LG

LG Magna e-Powertrain, the joint venture between LG Electronics and Magna, which was founded in 2021, announced at IAA Mobility 2023 that it is expanding its presence with a new facility in Miskolc, Hungary. The facility is located in the industrial area of Miskolc, which has well-developed infrastructure and is strategically situated near OEM customers and other Magna sites in the region. The company has also received strong support from the Hungarian government and local authorities.

The completion of the new plant is planned for 2025. with the production of e-motors beginning and planning to offer a range of electrified powertrain solutions, including inverters and on-board chargers for the growing EV market.

The 284,000 square meter facility will be the first LG Magna e-Powertrain production site in Europe, and at the start of production in 2026, the company expects to create around 200 new jobs.

“The construction of the new facility in Hungary is another milestone for the joint venture in implementing its growth plan," says Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain. "With this new capacity - the first of the JV LG Magna e-Powertrain is well positioned to keep pace with customer demand and the increase in global EV production."
