IAA Mobility 2023 – experience connected mobility
For the general public, the most beautiful spots in Munich's city center will once again become an exhibition space. The "Open Space" is free for all visitors from Tuesday to Sunday (Sept 5-10).
"We have transformed the IAA 2021 from a traditional auto show into a mobility show, with a new location - Munich - and a new concept," explains Jürgen Mindel, Managing Director of the VDA and responsible for the IAA, "now we have further refined the concept."
Trade Visitors at the Trade Fair
The IAA Summit, including the IAA Conference, will take place at the Munich Trade Fair Center and is exclusively for trade visitors and journalists from the entire mobility sector. This B2B part of the IAA Mobility 2023 will be held from Tuesday to Friday (Sept 5-8) and is subject to a fee. The exhibition stands will not be thematically sorted but will be mixed in six halls.
"The further developed concept for the second IAA in Munich once again underscores the awareness that the goal of sustainable mobility can only be achieved together - in close exchange between industry, science, politics, media, and customers. The IAA provides an important platform for this. At Mercedes-Benz, we are looking forward to it," says Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes-Benz.
Focus on Climate-Neutral Mobility
At the IAA Mobility 2023 in September, exhibitors will provide various forms of vehicles from cars to micromobility for visitors to test. Cars can be driven in the city or on the highway, while micromobility options like e-scooters or cargo bikes can be tested on the "Cycling & Micromobility Course" at the IAA Summit on a closed circuit. Micromobility options will also be available at the IAA Open Space in downtown Munich.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Open the IAA
The IAA Mobility 2023 will be opened by the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, as part of the IAA Summit on the exhibition grounds. In addition, Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder have announced their intention to visit the mobility fair. According to Mindel, the participation of other high-ranking political representatives is also anticipated.
Confirmed and Awaiting Manufacturers
At the second IAA in Munich, leading automotive manufacturers such as AUDI, BMW, BYD, CUPRA, Ford, FAW-brand Hongqi, Leapmotor, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Porsche, Renault, Vinfast, and the Volkswagen Group will present their models.
“The BMW Group is already looking forward to the second IAA Mobility in Munich. There we will show how we make tomorrow's mobility more sustainable and at the same time more human with technology and innovations. Because individual mobility is and remains a core element of modern society,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
Leading suppliers such as Bosch, Brose Fahrzeugteile, Continental, Denso, ElringKlinger, FORVIA, Hella, Hyundai MOBIS, IAV, KIRCHHOFF Automotive, MAGNA, MAHLE, Samsung Interior, Schaeffler, Siemens, Webasto, ZEISS Microoptics, and ZF will also participate as exhibitors in the B2B format.
“The willingness to register 12 months in advance has disappeared since Corona. Everything is now much more short-term,” says Jan Heckmann, Project Manager for IAA Mobility at VDA, “in 2021, for example, Kia only decided to participate in the fair in the summer.”
This also explains why some companies have not yet confirmed their participation. Talks are ongoing with the South Koreans, but also with Tesla and the "newcomers" Lucid, Fisker, and Genesis.
Charging, Electromobility, and Battery
From the Battery, Charging, Electromobility, and Energy sector, the following companies have registered, among others: EnBW, CATL, Farasis Energy Europe, CHARGE-V, ChargeX, Digital Charging Solutions, EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies, e-mobilio GmbH, Gaius Automotive China, Gentex Corporation, Guangdong Greenway Technology, GUS Technology China, HeyCharge, Hive Power China, HTM Hydro Technology Motors, Longwell Company China, MAHLE chargeBIG, ProLogium Technology, RABOT CHARGE, Samsung SDI, Shenzhen BASiC Semiconductor China, Shenzhen VMAX New Energy China, XEV China, and Wallbox Chargers.
Experience Connected Mobility
In line with the motto “Experience Connected Mobility,” IAA Mobility 2023 places a strong focus on the advancing digitalization of the mobility sector. With commitments from renowned tech companies such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Luminar, Qualcomm, or Seres (Huawei), the IAA sees itself as the optimal B2B networking platform for interdisciplinary exchange or seeking new partnerships. For the second IAA in Munich, AI companies including Autel Digital Power, AutoBrains AI Technologies, Automotive Artificial Intelligence, Brighter AI Technologies, c.technology AG, and electronics companies such as Hamamatsu Photonics have also registered. Institutions from the research sector, such as the Fraunhofer Society or the German Aerospace Center, are also among the exhibitors again.
“IAA Mobility is a premier gathering place for the world's leading automotive and technology companies and a great location for Luminar. Here we can discuss the advantages of lidar for passenger cars with automotive manufacturers to enhance safety and enable autonomous driving on highways,” says Jason Eichenholz, Co-founder and CTO of Luminar.
Startups and High-Tech
At the IAA Mobility Summit, 100 startups will have the opportunity to present themselves among leading companies in the industry. Currently, over 80 applications from startups worldwide have been received – including from the USA, Israel, Singapore, Austria, Switzerland, Scotland, the United Kingdom, Spain, and, of course, Germany. Additionally, there will be a European High-Tech Pavilion for high-profile companies and startups.
“IAA Mobility aims to showcase new forms of mobility. Autonomous individual transport, autonomous shuttles, and hydrogen will also be part of it,” announces Christine von Breitenbuch, Project Manager of IAA Mobility at Messe München.
More Test Drives, More Locations, More Events
After extensive opportunities to test new vehicles were made available in 2021, manufacturers plan to provide more vehicles this year. Test drives for the general public will start in various locations of exhibitors in the city center, but vehicles will also be available for trade visitors at the exhibition grounds. Whether it's Max-Josephs-Platz, Wittelsbacherplatz, Odeonsplatz Hofgarten, or Königsplatz, some of Munich's most beautiful spots will be used as exhibition areas. Additionally, Königsplatz will be utilized as a concert stage on three evenings – whether the performances will also be freely accessible has yet to be confirmed by the IAA officials.
What Will Happen to the “Blue Lane”?
There have been discussions in Munich's Mobility Department about the “Blue Lane” – the dedicated lane for environmentally friendly transportation. Since police find it difficult to keep unauthorized users from using the “environment lane,” the city of Munich plans to scrap the “Blue Lane,” according to a report from the Süddeutsche Zeitung. The IAA organizers, however, do not intend to give it up; in fact, they want to expand the lane for eco-friendly driving.
Bikes at the Show
For the first time, visitors to the IAA Mobility will be able to test the latest bicycles and e-bikes in the English Garden in Munich. The Bavarian administration of state-owned castles, gardens, and lakes has approved a corresponding test track. The test track will be free of charge for all visitors during the show from September 5th to 10th. Various rounds up to 3.8 kilometers in length will be available for testing bicycles and e-bikes. The exhibition areas of the exhibitors will be located in the Hofgarten and on Ludwigstrasse. From there, visitors can ride through the English Garden to Kleinhesseloher See. All bicycle exhibitors will have the opportunity to offer testing quotas.
For trade visitors at the exhibition grounds, there will also be a “Cycling & Micromobility Parcours” where e-scooters and cargo bikes can be tested on a closed-loop course during the IAA Summit.
“The e-bike will play an important role in future mobility. We see the IAA Mobility once again as a good platform to convey our vision of mobility and our passion for the product to the visitors,” says Tomi Viiala, Co-CEO of myStromer AG.
Among the bicycle manufacturers that have already committed are Specialized, CaGo Bike, Riese & Müller, Mubea U-Mobility, MyStromer, Black Tea Motorbikes, and RKS Motor, with more expected to follow.
Cargo Bike of the Year
For the fourth time, Huss-Verlag, through its magazine Logistra, is launching the “International Cargobike of the Year” competition. The competition has established itself in the market as a platform for the innovations of the young but booming cargo bike industry. For the first time, the award will be presented this year at the IAA.
“Not only in private use but especially in commercial applications, e-cargo bikes are seen by many experts as having great potential. Properly combined, such as with micro depots and e-trucks in the pre-run, they can become game changers in urban logistics and achieve the squaring of the circle: more deliveries with fewer emissions. We wanted to account for this important trend for climate protection and the transportation turnaround from the beginning with accompanying reporting in our magazine Logistra and our award to honor the manufacturers' innovative spirit,” explains Huss-Verlag Managing Director Rainer Langhammer.
A jury of experienced bike logistics professionals will evaluate the numerous new products from the CABOTY candidates in a compact process and select the best-suited, most technically innovative, and economically viable models for commercial purposes in the categories “Light Cargobikes,” “Heavy Cargobikes,” and “Cargobike Trailer.” These will then be awarded at a dedicated ceremony at the show.
What Does This Mean?
Following the participation of 744 exhibitors and over 400,000 visitors – 300,000 in the city center and 100,000 at the exhibition center – in 2021, the show expects significantly more visitors after the corona crisis in 2023. The target groups are more clearly defined with the strict separation into B2B and B2C – exhibitions. The exhibitor list is not yet final, “but you can still expect big names,” concludes VDA Chief Mindel.
