IAA Mobility 2023: Cupra DarkRebel - Best of Showcars!
The data collected in the online hyper-configurator flowed into the final design of the DarkRebel show car, which has now physically made its way from the virtual world to the real world at the IAA Mobility. And how! The result was a fully electric, two-seater shooting-brake sports car that reflects the "passion and disruptive mindset" of the Cupra brand – a statement we can fully agree with, especially since the parent company is VW! Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra, describes the project as follows:
"Thanks to the passion and creativity of the Cupra Tribe, we managed to turn one of our most far-reaching visions into a real show car. The Cupra DarkRebel takes on the most provocative design language of the CUPRA brand. It is a rebel with a purpose: to prove that the electric cars of the future can be sporty, sexy, and emotional."
Mysterious Play with Light
Light is a key element, and this is evident in the illumination of the logo: it underscores the dialogue between materiality and immateriality and demonstrates how light is capable of showcasing colors and materials. Targeted illumination is used to transform the transparency of crystal-clear elements into solid, digitally colored sculptures.
The distinctive front end with the long hood stands out in a special way thanks to the iconic triangular light signature: the inspiration for the lighting concept came from the Cupra logo, which is split into three individual triangles and used as daytime running lights.
Inside, a Wild Center Console Runs Through the Car
The center console, which is supposed to be reminiscent of the keel of a sailboat and is made of crystal-clear transparent material, connects the front and rear of the DarkRebel show car. The extraordinary design of the center console emphasizes the progressive vehicle design and gives the interior a sporty appearance. Smooth surfaces combined with sharp lines create a strong sense of tension, intended to express "energy and determination." This is accentuated by the mysteriously appearing, fluorescent body color. The dark purple hue varies – depending on how the ambient light hits the car's body – and underscores the powerful character of the DarkRebel show car.
Wheels like those on a racing car
The wheel design of the concept vehicle is inspired by the brand's racing cars and symbolizes performance and efficiency. The triangular CUPRA logo spans parametrically over the wheels – from the shape of the aero rims to the copper-colored design details.
In terms of dimensions, the dark rebel remains quite realistic except for its width: the concept vehicle measures 4.5 meters in length, 2.2 meters in width, and 1.3 meters in height. The show car practically comes to life when its opened doors rise to a height of up to 2.2 meters. Difficult only in underground garages...
"The Cupra DarkRebel embodies the entire DNA and values of the brand. With a wider shoulder line, a long hood, and its lower passenger cabin, it is fully focused on the person sitting behind the wheel," says Cupra Design Director Jorge Diez, adding:
"The Cupra DarkRebel was developed to venture into a new dimension where emotions and the joy of driving dictate our actions."
In fact, the DarkRebel challenges the established rules of conventional design even in the interior. By using parametric design and additive manufacturing, the concept vehicle pursues a consistent sustainability approach. Upon entering the vehicle, passengers find themselves in an extremely radical environment, bounded by elegant trims with dynamic shapes.
Crazy: The asymmetrical center console made from metal printing!
The key element of the interior is the asymmetrical center console, which exudes lightness with its sculptural surface. It is produced using the latest 3D metal printing technology and offers maximum stability with minimal weight. The console, oriented towards the driver's seat, is positioned between the seats, extends to the front part of the cabin, and connects it with the bodywork. This ergonomically positions the key driving elements in a clever manner. Its optimized longitudinal alignment, which also includes an adjusted pedal position, offers ideal ergonomics for sporty driving.
New materials also in the seats
Another highlight in the interior is the super sports bucket seats, whose headrests are covered with 3D knitted fabric and whose design is supported by a structure made from crystal-clear transparent material with copper inserts. The bucket seats are mounted as low as possible, providing the driver's leg with additional side support thanks to their lightweight structure. The seat impresses with a surprisingly novel shape that best adapts to the human body, ensuring maximum comfort and support during sporty driving.
Another distinctive feature is the steering wheel, which combines shapes from the world of motorsport with the interactivity of the gaming world. Besides the steering wheel, the gear knob draws attention, mounted on the central center console and made of a crystal-clear transparent material that lights up and invites you to touch.
The air conditioning corresponds with thermal imaging cameras
The sports car focuses on performance both on the road and in terms of technological advancement. A thermal imaging camera in the headliner monitors the interior, and the intelligent air conditioning system automatically adjusts the temperature and airflow. The air vents below the windshield are lined with a moving breathable fabric derived from high-performance sports, which becomes visible depending on the airflow. Additionally, the rear ambient lighting color indicates whether the interior is heating up or cooling down.
Lighting is also used as a communication tool in other areas: the upper interior trim provides a perfect surface for light effects. The interior also uses sustainable materials made from 90 percent biodegradable bamboo. The illumination extends from the lower part of the windshield over the front part of the passenger cell, along the sides of the seats to the backrests. Different light effects create a lively interior, whose dark blue color can turn into shimmering, reflective magenta and violet. Components such as the steering wheel make the light effects appear even more energized.
The DarkRebel show car offers an innovative User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design. The concept vehicle represents CUPRA's unique mindset and digital DNA, redefining how we might experience a car in the future through the seamless integration of the physical and digital worlds. Thanks to the integrated gaming elements, users are not just on the road with their car but also constantly in touch with the Cupra Tribe.
The UX/UI journey of the CUPRA DarkRebel offers three unique experiences: Exponential Square, Exponential Cube, and Exponential Infinite:
Exponential Square: The experience is enhanced by a modern digital cockpit with futuristic graphics and a customizable 3D avatar, which humanizes the experience.
Exponential Cube: The vehicle showcases its motorsport DNA and offers an electrifying experience, inspired by high-performance race cars and the gaming world, such as real-time positioning on the racetrack, lap times, and performance data.
Exponential Infinite ventures into the unknown territory of connected mobility. While the car is parked and charging, users can enter the Metahype – CUPRA's space in the Metaverse, providing an opportunity to interact with the Cupra Tribe.
What does this mean?
Whether one necessarily always needs to interact with the Cupra Tribe in the DarkRebel is debatable – but overall, Cupra has truly outdone itself here – definitely a contender for "Best of Show" in our eyes. The wild visual design is matched by wild ideas! And this from a VW subsidiary...
