IAA 2021: Mercedes-Benz presents the EQE

As the sixth electric vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz car program, the EQE premieres at the IAA - and it could potentially become the future core of the brand.

The E-Class is still considered the core brand of Mercedes-Benz and now, like the EQS, receives electric support – in the form of the EQE, which will premiere at the IAA 2021 along with the EQG. In addition, the GLE and GLS are also set to receive all-electric siblings. For the EQE, Daimler promises an S-Class interior on a smaller footprint than the combustion-engine E-Class. Just like the technically related EQS, the battery lies flat in the floor. The EQE will be built alongside the EQS in “Factory 56” in Sindelfingen.

There are currently only speculations regarding performance: The main models are said to have 400 HP and a substantial 750 Nm of torque, but there will likely also be a “tamer” entry-level version and an even stronger AMG model. The range is expected to exceed 650 kilometers, and we also anticipate a “base version” with a smaller battery that will cover around 500 kilometers, which would realistically be around 400 kilometers. Two motors and therefore all-wheel drive are set for the launch, with a rear-wheel-drive version likely to follow later. The capacity of the self-produced lithium-ion battery in the top version is 90 kWh. Below that, there could be a version with 70 to 77 kWh.

Top aerodynamics for high range, T-model would be desirable

Guaranteed to contribute to the high range is extremely good aerodynamics – one can expect values around 0.20. An active chassis is intended to ensure comfort. The rear wheels steer up to an angle of 4.5 degrees as standard. Only optionally can a larger angle of up to 10 degrees be unlocked, through a software update for an additional cost. But even the 4.5 degrees make the EQE quite agile. Very disappointing and incomprehensible: Unlike the EQS, the EQE will have to make do with a small trunk lid, unnecessarily limiting its variability – the EQE could have greatly benefited from the large tailgate more than the EQS. But maybe Mercedes-Benz will yet introduce an EQE as a T-model? That would certainly be feasible!

Similar to the EQS, you can also order the Hyperscreen for an additional charge in the EQE, which consists of three displays behind a curved real glass band. For the driver and front passenger, the content is shown on 12.3-inch screens, while the central display stretches to 17.7 inches. The overall span of the Hyperscreen is also 141 centimeters here.

What does this mean?

With the EQE, Mercedes-Benz is also electrifying its core brand – the E-Class – and could even (finally) offer more compact dimensions compared to the combustion engine. This could make driving in cities and maneuvering into one's own garage easier. It's just a pity that the EQE will probably only come with a small trunk lid. This is already a major inconvenience in Tesla's Model 3. This is why we immediately call for a T-model here.
