i-Mobility Stuttgart 2022: Pössl turns Citroën Vanster into an E-Camper
For now, the range of electrically powered mobile homes or recreational vehicles is small. But it is growing, and a clientele for it definitely exists, as Clemens Schulze, Managing Director of Melzer Reisemobile, notes. The range is less of an issue: who drives to the North Cape on vacation anyway. More important, according to the camping expert, is that the vehicle can also handle everyday life with kids and gear. Compact van models like the Citroën Spacetourer have been in high demand for years, driven even more by the pandemic. But how can this be achieved "sustainably" instead of using a fossil-fuel diesel? The answer could be vehicles like the camping conversion of the ë-Spacetourer, equipped by Pössl with the proven "ingredients" of a pop-up roof with double bed, optional kitchen box in the rear, and optional second sleeping area in the passenger compartment - thereby becoming an emission-free and flexible everyday and travel vehicle.
Given the intended use, the five-meter-long Strom-Camper, which is somewhat city-friendly with a height of 1.99 meters and a width of 1.92 meters, is only available with the larger battery, which has a gross capacity of 75 kWh and, like the station wagon counterpart, should ideally offer a range of up to 330 kilometers. Especially in summer city and suburban traffic, this range is realistic, less so on the highway or in winter. According to Schulze's experience, the offered range is sufficient for everyday use, and also for weekend trips to the countryside or even medium-distance journeys where one might sleep in the car. The 100-kW CCS charger helps on the road, and in cities, the 11-kW AC charger ensures you're back up to energy during a half-day tour. The front-wheel-drive E-Transporter with the 100 kW motor and 260 Nm is quite fast and only falls short of diesel performance on the highway.
The package is also attractively priced: The displayed vehicle with a folding gas stove in the rear, external socket, folding roof with bed, and three-seater bench in the back and swivel seats in the front costs just under 60,000 Euros gross, with the premium reduction bringing it to 51,000 Euros. For a fully electric camping vehicle that gives you a good conscience while traveling, it's a reasonable price. For the 400 units that Pössl has in stock throughout Germany, Schulze sees no sales problems; demand remains high, and the charm of a compact, fully electric solution convinces a good number of customers.
Incidentally, Stellantis sister brand Peugeot is also working on an E-Camper: The City-Van Rifter is to be launched as a small and affordable camping vehicle with overnight accommodation options.
