Hyundai unveils fuel cell concept vehicle Initium
Hyundai has unveiled the concept vehicle Initium with fuel cell drive (FCEV) at its Motorstudio Goyang. Initium, derived from the Latin word for "beginning" or "first," represents the significance of the South Korean automaker as a pioneer in fuel cell technology and the goal of creating a society that relies on hydrogen as an energy source. Initium offers a preview of a new production vehicle that Hyundai intends to present in the first half of 2025. Additionally, the study incorporates 27 years of the company's experience in developing hydrogen technology.
New Design Language
With the concept vehicle, Hyundai simultaneously introduces the new design language "Art of Steel," which reflects the core of HTWO, the Hyundai Motor Group's business division for the entire value chain in hydrogen technology.
SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, presented the concept vehicle: "We have already explored the limits of steel's formability during the development process to create an art form," explains Lee. "With the Initium, we have developed an SUV design that is both robust and safe."
The design of the vehicle incorporates the HTWO symbol, representing the vision of a hydrogen-powered future. The "+" sign in the light signature integrates seamlessly into the front section, creating a distinctive appearance for fuel cell vehicles through clear contours and elegance. Robust 21” wheels and a roof rack complete the equipment.
Performance and Everyday Usability in Focus
The development of the Initium focused on three aspects: high range, spacious interior and trunk, as well as comprehensive comfort and safety systems. Thanks to large hydrogen tanks, the BZ car offers a range of over 650 km. Aerodynamically designed wheels reduce air and rolling resistance. The electric motor output is up to 150 kW.
The Initium features a route planner specifically developed for hydrogen vehicles. With its help, one can plan the route and find a hydrogen station without an additional app. At the same time, the availability and status of a station and waiting times can be checked in real-time.
The onboard fuel cell generates emission-free electricity, which can be used to charge various electronic devices thanks to the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. This allows the vehicle to also be used as a potential energy source. To maximize passenger protection in the event of a collision, the vehicle has been equipped with a multi-layered body structure at the front, reinforced side sections, and nine airbags.
