Hypion opens heavy-duty hydrogen refueling station in Neumünster

The H2 Hub Neumünster is a hydrogen filling station optimized not only for fuel-cell cars but also for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Quantron AG is delivering a total of five QHM FCEV Aero to local customers, who are expected to be consumers of the fuel.

At the end of November, Minister and Head of the State Chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein Dirk Schrödter gave the starting signal for an H2 filling station operated by Hypion, focusing on heavy commercial vehicles in Neumünster. According to the company, it is Europe's first AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation) compliant hydrogen filling station with a refueling capacity of 2,000 kilograms per day. The location advantage is cited as being situated along federal highway 7 in the logistics hub of Neumünster, specifically at Donaubogen 4. The automated H2 filling station is now available for refueling both cars and trucks.

“The establishment of a hydrogen filling station of this magnitude represents a technological innovation and also creates essential infrastructure for road freight transport, both regionally and supraregionally. This not only strengthens the business location but also provides private individuals with more diverse options to rely on green hydrogen as an environmentally-friendly drive in mobility,” said Schrödter.

According to Hypion CEO Dr. Stefan Rehm, the opening is a crucial component for the H2Hub Neumünster, which was founded in 2020. The gas station operator is working closely with local fleet operators Herbert Voigt, F. A. Kruse jun., Edeka Nord, Netto Marken Discount, and Ernst Krebs. Additionally, EDF Germany (Électricité de France) and HanseWerk have invested in the project.

"Neumünster has traditionally been a logistics hub in the center of the state. We have ideal conditions here to actively advance the green hydrogen economy in the north. I am pleased that we have now established this milestone for the mobility transition and can offer resident companies a sustainable solution for zero-emission heavy-duty transport," stated Matthias Boxberger, Chairman of HanseWerk AG.

The H2-HubNMS project is being funded with a total of 4,891,320 euros by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, according to company information. The funding directive is coordinated by Now GmbH and implemented by the project management organization Jülich (PtJ).

5 Quantron Hydrogen Trucks

Quantron AG aims to contribute to the uptake of hydrogen at the newly opened site and presented a hydrogen-powered QHM FCEV Aero during the inauguration, which is expected to achieve a range of up to 700 kilometers. A total of five of these vehicles, in which the 54-kilogram hydrogen tanks are fully integrated into the chassis, are to be delivered to local customers. In addition, hydrogen consumption is to be optimized by a specially developed intelligent Q-Energy management system. This system is said to achieve maximum efficiency through the interaction between the e-axle, fuel cell, high-voltage battery, and HV auxiliary consumers.
