hvv hop: Passenger record in Harburg and own charging stations

The on-demand pioneer recorded over 53,000 passengers and 42,000 rides in Hamburg-Harburg. In addition, twelve new charging stations are being put into service, which can charge the vehicles in up to an hour, thus making handling easier.

Since its launch in January, the on-demand service hvv hop in Harburg has enjoyed steadily increasing popularity and user numbers. In July, Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH), the second-largest public transport company in northern Germany and operator of the app-based service, achieved a new milestone: the electrically powered hvv hop shuttles transported their 50,000th passenger in the new service area. By July 31, more than 53,000 passengers had used the shuttle service in 42,000 trips.

"We are pleased to be able to offer Harburg residents a modern and everyday-suitable service with this innovative offering," said Lorenz Kasch, Managing Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH), which operates hvv hop.

He sees this as proof that on-demand transport works as a complement to the existing public transport system and has great potential as a modern means of transport to "inspire even more people to use public transport." This is confirmed by the experience in Harburg and other service areas.

"On-demand systems are an important component of the network-wide public transport offering - the success of the hvv hop service in Harburg speaks for itself," says Raimund Brodehl, Managing Director of the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv).

Therefore, they want to further expand and harmonize the hvv hop offering sensibly and in addition to the existing public transportation (ÖPNV) as part of the network-wide on-demand strategy, announced Brodehl. The fleet currently includes 28 partially electric vehicles. To meet the increasing demand, VHH continues to invest in the service in Harburg. From now on, twelve charging stations will be available to drivers in the P+R parking garage at the Harburg S-Bahn station.

"The location at the Harburg S-Bahn station makes sense for our locally emission-free fleet, as many of our trips start and end from this central transportation hub," explains Andreas Bahr, VHH operations manager in Harburg.

The charging stations feature intelligent charging management and can fully charge a vehicle within one hour. This addresses the rising user numbers and ensures that our offering remains consistently available at a high level to the people in Harburg, adds Bahr. In terms of payment options, the range is also being expanded, and a prepaid card is being introduced in Harburg. This can now be stored as a payment method in the hvv hop app.

“We already offer the standard digital payment methods PayPal, credit card, or SEPA direct debit. With the prepaid card, we are now accommodating passengers who prefer an analog payment method," promotes Bahr.
