There was a grand event in Offenbach and Tom Gardner, Vice President of Honda Europe, presented several new developments – including, in a side note, two new sports cars. According to Gardner, they belong to the "DNA" of Honda. One is electrified and the other is electric.

It was also clear that the latter is likely to be the new NSX, which is thus further evolving into an electric hypercar. Complete with a smart battery package and 50-50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles.

Now, an image of the two sports cars has also surfaced, suggesting that the second sports car, due to its long hood and classic proportions, could be the electrified model and could pay homage to the S 2000, although it is no longer a roadster.

The fact is that the wild "R" label will also be carried into the future – Gardner left no doubt about that when asked. Whether Honda will give itself a present for its 75th anniversary in 2023, or present the sports cars later, Gardner left open. With the new CR-V, the ZR-V, and the e:NY1, there are still three premieres to come anyway.

What does this mean?

Even though it doesn't look like it right now: Sports cars are part of Honda's DNA, which is why they are planning two sports cars in the future. At the top of the lineup, an electric NSX successor is likely to serve as an image leader, and beneath it, a more mass-market sports car that is likely to carry the Civic powertrain in a more aggressive form. Both models would do the somewhat faceless Honda lineup a lot of good right now.
