Honda CR-V: In the future also as a plug-in hybrid
Honda is also releasing a new CR-V – unfortunately, not electric. Visually, it takes some cues from the Volvo XC90 and has slightly grown in all dimensions to create more space inside. A first sitting test showed: The CR-V subtly stretches towards the upper mid-size SUV class... In addition to the well-known e:HEV full hybrid drive, the new CR-V will also be the first Honda model in Europe to receive a plug-in hybrid drive, which is logically called "e:PHEV." The core of both drive variants is a modified 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine with Atkinson cycle, which is said to further improve efficiency, driving culture, and power delivery.
e:HEV could also stand for "Universal Drive" – it is used in Civic, ZR-V and also CR-V
The e:PHEV plug-in hybrid drive uses the same lightweight and high-performance electric motors as the e:HEV. The CR-V e:PHEV can travel up to 81 kilometers in electric mode; this covers most daily drives. For long-distance drivers, however, the more economical e:HEV might be the better choice, as Honda hybrids generally score points for their fuel efficiency. Honda quotes 5.9 l/100 km or 140 g CO2 for the e:HEV.
At a battery temperature of 25 degrees, the battery can be charged to 100 percent in just 2.5 hours. e:HEV full hybrid system The CR-V with full hybrid drive features the e:HEV drive technology from the new Civic. A powerful lithium-ion battery and two compact lightweight electric motors, together with the petrol engine, are said to ensure a seamless transition between EV, hybrid, and combustion drive in all driving situations.
Visually, the CR-V looks more elegant and mature
Visually, it has been successfully refined compared to its predecessor, without, however, setting any strong extreme brand-typical accents. Special attention is said to have been given to the view by Honda designers and engineers. Thanks to the low fender edges of the CR-V and the wide, flat hood, the driver can clearly see the front dimensions of the vehicle. In addition, the large window areas provide all passengers on board with an excellent all-around view. This reduces driving stress, enhances the open space feeling, and conveys a sense of safety and confidence to all passengers – values that were last communicated in the 1980s – thanks for that!
But unfortunately, the new CR-V has also grown in all directions: It has become wider, longer, and higher than the previous model and offers a bit more space for passengers and 18% more cargo volume. In the rear, the 40 mm longer wheelbase is supposed to provide 16 mm more legroom (compared to its predecessor), while the eight-way adjustable seatbacks of the rear seats and their 10.5-degree greater recline angle enable a relaxed seating position. Additionally, the longitudinally adjustable rear seat bench offers more variability. Nevertheless, the space in the rear is hardly more generous than in the smaller ZR-V. However, the trunk is much larger, with a standard capacity of 600 liters.
Honda has improved the safety system
The safety level has also been updated: New Honda Sensing functions are intended to contribute to optimal active and passive safety. The new CR-V is the first model with Honda Sensing 360, Honda's new omnidirectional safety and driver assistance system that eliminates blind spots around the vehicle, reduces driver stress, and thus helps to further prevent collisions.
What does that mean?
Honda has successfully further developed the CR-V, although in a more evolutionary rather than revolutionary manner. Therefore, it does a good job as a hybrid and should consume little fuel, but it cannot compete with the new EVs from the competition.
